Tricare has referred me to Dr. Orloff for this surgery. Based on what I have read here, he is a general surgeon and does more than just bariatric surgeries. I also have read that he does open RNY procedures only. I was hoping for the LAP, just based on recovery and pain. (I am a wimp) I am scheduled for April23 for my consult. (hate the waiting game, but put myself on a cancellation list)

I have met with Dr. Orloff twice. He made me feel very secure that he was confident in this surgery's success. He was quite frank about the risks. Once I had decided to go ahead with the surgery, he shared with me that this is one of the most gratifying procedures he performs. Dr. Orloff listened to my questions, and answered them respectfully. I would recommend him. The only negative thing I have to say is that the waiting time in his office is very long. Bring a book! Expect to be there a while!

Dr Orloff is very knowledgeble about this surgery ..has been doing it many years...he is very conservative in his treatment. The staff is very supportive. He does take no frills approach..he didnt order a lot of tests or counciling prior to surgery, i did meet with him twice before surgery was scheduled and once again for pre op exam...my surgery was done at UCSD, Thornton, in LA JOLLA, CA. and i felt i had the best of care and accommadations.
UCSD is only hospital/clinic that would take medi-cal insurance.
I havent had any complaints about the aftercare ..he has been there for me regarding my problems and listened to my symptoms and got me into the hosp to treat the problem in timely manner.
Prior to surgery, he fully discussed the risks and the procedure..even drawing diagram of what he would be doing.
I have no complaints about his surgical competence and his bedside manner is wonderful. He is very skilled surgeon and very caring and compassionate. And he has never gotten impatient with my many questions.

I have met Dr. Orloff several times over the last 6 months. Both my wife, Cynthia, and I are having our surgeries done by him. He is very straightforward and honest, and also both he and his office manager, Leslie, have taken a personal interest in us leading up to the surgery. One thing about the pre-op visits and having this done at a teaching hospital is that you will often meet with doctors who are not familiar with your case and you have to explain things over and over. Dr. Orloff, on the other hand, DOES remember you and your particular circumstances very well. Dr. Orloff's surgeries are among the longest, time-wise of anyone doing this proceedure, perhaps again because this is a teaching hospital, but also because he is very thorough and very much patient-safety driven. This also means a longer time in the hospital and a longer recovery time, but those are worth the trade-offs to me for someone who's main concern is my safety and not how many of these can be done in a given week or how big the scar is. I reccomend him highly.

At first glance I thought he is an older male
and won't understand. I was completely wrong.
He is the most understanding, compationate
doctor I have ever delt with when it comes
to the issues of being morbidly obese. He
always seems to have your best interests in
mind. I had no trouble with insurance approval.
Dr. Orloff took care of that. I feel my
hospital stay was so positive because he was
my surgeon. It is obvious he is highly
respected at the UCSD medical center.

The only thing I can think of that I may
say I didn't like about him is that he is very
firm/strict about your diet and taking care
care of yourself (exercising, taking your
vitamins, ect) Which he does because he cares
and wants you to succeed! :^)

Overall I would highly recommend him. He has
helped me to make such a major improvement
in my life. He's one of my heros!!

I was very impressed with my first meeting with Dr. Orloff. I had a lot of questions written down and he answered them all and even drew a picture of what they would be doing during the surgery.

In October I had to go back into the hospital for what I now believe was a condition that I had prior to my bypass surgery. After 3-1/2 weeks in the hospital and many office visits I can say that I have more confidence in him that I did the first day I met him.

His assistant Leslye is a dream. She's helpful and very patient. I feel like she and Dr. Orloff really care about their patients.

Dr. Orloff has been doing bypass surgery for over 20 years. He's been doing the RNY for 11 years.

He is not a diet doctor but a surgeon. He gives you the tools to lose weight but it's up to you to take the initiative to take care of yourself and do the right things. There are support groups in San Diego that you can attend free of charge if you feel you need added help.

I completely trust Dr. Orloff's skills. He is a wonderful surgeon as well as a caring physician.

I had an appointment with Dr. Orloff at UCSD within one week of my first call. He's a very pleasant older gentleman with a good sense of humor. He explained the surgery in detail to me and my husband. He performs the "open" RNY surgery only because he states there is less chance of complication and risk vs "lap". He seems very competent.
