He is a very nice man, he explained everything in detail, and he'll answer any question you have.
My impression has not changed of him.
His office staff was just the best the are very nice and willing to help you with anything.
I can't say that there was anything I didn't like about him.
You must listen very carfully when he talks becasue of his acsent.
He emphasizes aftercare very much so.
I have not had my pre-op visit yet so i do not know what his aftercare program is yet.
He explains the risks of surgery very well, the simple way to avoid these risks is to do JUST as told! Cheating is about just cheating yourself anymore, it's much more serious of an outcome!
I would rate Dr. Afram an 8, after all NO doctor is perfect, they are just "practicing".
Both.

I was very impressed with his office. The people are very friendly, and I had an opportunity to meet with 5 post-op patients while waiting for my consultation.

Dr. Afram does not do a hard sell on you. He tells you why you should have the surgery, but you know that already. He also explained fully how the surgery would go, and answered my husband's questions about the safety of the operation.

Before I can have surgery, I have to meet with a psychologist, a nutritionist, attend an aftercare support group, have a physical and blood work, and have radiology performed.

He knows what he's doing, and doesn't take chances with you or your life.

Dr. Afram is out of network on my health insurance plan, but I am quite happy to pay the money insurance doesn't cover.

Initial consultation scheduled for Tues. 1/7/03. I have been doing alot of reading and research over the past few months and just can't wait to get the ball rolling for this surgery.
1/8/03-Had my initial consult yesterday. Dr. Afram and his staff were very friendly and informative. I have a good and warm feeling about Dr. Afram and his staff. They were willing to answer my questions and explain anything I requested.

Dr. Lin is my savior!!! Dr. Lin is very down to earth. He was very informative about the procedure. Everything he told me was true (pain, expectations. etc.) His staff is great. They are so helpful and encouraging. They were very knowledgeable about what the insurance companies needed to approve the surgery. They were very good about keeping on top of the paperwork that came in from all of the specialists that I had to see. He always gives me plenty of time at each appointment and never makes me feel that any question is stupid. He is not arrogant like some doctors can be. He has a great bedside manner. He acts like he really cares about you as a person and your personal success. Dr. Lin is truly the best doctor that I have ever seen. There is not one thing about him that I didn't like. I would be happy to answer specific questions regarding the care that I have received. Truly no complaints. I did have some issues with my care in the hospital, however; everything that I brought to Dr. Lins' attention, he helped with.

My surgeon was Dr. Paul Lin and very very competent and has a wonderful bedside manner. His support staff is always wonderful....I can't say enough good things about Dr. Lin and his staff.

The only thing I would say need to be improved is his aftercare program...he doesn't really have one at this point and you're left to find your own. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. He does emphasize the importance of aftercare but doesn't have a program for his patients. That is the one and only thing I would say needs improvement.

The Dr and his staff were all very informative when it came to the surgery and all aspects of it (risks, what to expect, etc).

I would rate him very very highly for his practice and surgical competence and bedside manner.

My first impression of him was that he was
very clinical and emotionless of the
procedure. However, after becoming his
patient I feel that he cares quite a lot
about his patients. His office staff is
mostly great - especially his nurse
practitioner Denise. His residents/med
students were great to me in the hospital.
He was just listed in Washingtonian magazine
as one of the top docs in the DC area. He
does a lot of cancer surgeries in addition
to the WLSs. He makes you watch a 45 minute
video the first time you go to his office
and he gives lots of literature as to the
risks and benefits of the surgery.
Unfortunately he does not actively participate
in an aftercare program but they do give
you info about one.
I think his surgical competence is better
than his bedside manner but it's a close
call.

I love Dr. A. The first time that I met him, I felt totatlly at ease. As time goes on and I keep losing the weight, the visits seem shorter, yet he asks all the questions that a good doctor should. Some patients say that they feel rushed...but I'm rather grateful that he gets to the point because I'm a pretty busy person and I don't have all day to sit in his office and wait around. I love his aftercare group sessions, which are informative and helpful....but if there is one thing that I've learned about bariatric surgery, it's that there's never really one answer to anyone's question. Everyone progresses differently and at various paces. My main goal was to change my eating habits while my pouch was still small so that when I was eventually able to eat more, I chose the right things to eat instead of what I had been eating before the surgery.

My doctor is Dr. Joseph Afram of Washington DC. He has been doing this surgery for 18 years. According to the testimonials of patients who have gone through his gentle care, I beleive I am in good hands. It took me two years to make up my mind and I attended almost all the seminars he has conducted. He also has a friendly and considerate staff. My surgery is on January 31st and I am certain that everyting will go on right by the grace of God. I like Dr. Afram because he shows concern for his patients, very courteous and respectful too. He sits you down and explains to you everything you need to know about the surgery and what to expect afterward. He emphasizes after care very, very much and he has a structured aftercare program - seventh day visit after the surgery, once a month for a year and once every three months after that. He says the surgery is not a magic bullet. One must be dedicated to exercising and following the nutrition plan offered by his office. The risks of the surgery were also spelled out but in his case, it is very minimal because they, as a team, have procedures to address those risks.
