Richard Dickerman, M.D. Bariatrics Bariatric Center

Dr. Dickerman was very nice and understanding. He no longer performs the surgery. By him being a transplant surgeon I am pretty much on my own here. I don't have a real support group and I don't call his office for anything unless I was in severe pain. He still take blood work once a year and he was really great surgeon. I lost 170 pounds so what can I say!!!

I met Dr. Dickerman Jan 23, 2003. I was nervous about the first visit and almost didn't go. I decided last minute to go and am glad I did. I am 25 years old and weigh 270lbs and was expecting him to tell me just to excersice and that I wouldn't be a candidate for WLS. However during our visit he was very informative and told me that I would be a candidate for the surgery and though it would be good that I do this at my age. He was very informative about risk and what to expect before and after surgery. I'm now waiting for insurance approval.

Dr. Dickerman is a nationally known general and transplant surgeon. He actually performed the world's first simultaneous heart/kidney/pancreas transplant. Five such procedures have performed worldwide and he has performed three. All three patients are doing well.
Dr. Dickerman has a very pleasant personality and truly enjoys helping morbidly obese people find hope through WLS. He does the surgery because it works. He has many satisfied patients.
At this time, he is very selective about performing WLS given his busy schedule with general and transplant surgery.

I LOVE DR. DICKERMAN, MY FIRST IMPRESSION OF HIM WAS TOTAL TRUST. HE WAS HONEST AND STRAIGHT FOWARD. I LOVE THE FACT THE HE GAVE DIRECT EYE CONTACT. I HATE TO INFORM THAT HE N0 LONGER DOES THE GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY THAT DOESN'T CHANGE MY IMPRESSION ON HIM I STILL CONTINUE TO SEE HIM ON MY FOLLOW-UP VISITS. I THANK GOD FOR ALLOWING ME TO MEET HIM AND HAVE THE SURGERY, A COUPLE OF MONTHS AFTER I HAD MY SURGERY WAS WHEN I FOUND OUT THAT HE WAS NO LONGER DOING THE SURGERY. HIS OFFICE STAFF IS GREAT. DR DICKERMAN WAS VERY INFORMATIVE ABOUT THE SURGERY AND IT'S RISK HE ADVISED THAT ONE OF THE RISK OF THE SURGERY WAS IN FACT DEATH. HE DIDN'T SUGAR COAT ANYTHING. OVERALL I WOULD RATE
DR. DICKERMAN IN MY BOOK HE'S ONE OF THE BEST

I thought Dr Dickerman seemed very approachable. He was very friendly and answered all my questions. His office staff is fine. He is a general surgeon and offices with other Dr's. They are busy. There wasn't anything not to like about Dr Dickerman. I'm not thrilled that I will be on a clear liquid diet for 4-5 days pre-op..oh well...I'm committed, so here goes! I get the sense that he really enjoys doing this surgery for folks. He was brief, yet thorough in explaining what will happen. I had read several books before my appointment and suggest that anyone do the same. I have a scheduled appointment with a dietrician in a couple of days. Office decor-1...Dr dickerman 10. By the way...he made the top 100 Dr's list in Dallas. I should mention that he will be doing my surgery with another Dr. Dr Lisa Fraga. She specializes in laproscopic surgery. Maybe she will get this group of male Dr's to spruce up their office!

After long consultations with my PCP and GYN
(I value their judgement and opinion imensely) we went over different surgeons and who they would feel comfortable (I'm known for my medical quirkyness and somewhat difficulty when it comes to surgery and diagnosis) with me using. Actually Dr. Dickerman's name was brought up individually by each doctor and they were more than satisfied with the way he handles patients and how he fights for them and their well being (he is also working hand in hand with my PCP, which I definitely like and other surgeons weren't going to). Each stated his bedside manner was a little gruff but other than that he was superb. I must say that their opinion of him was right on. He is a little hard around the edges but the knowledge he has (about this surgery and the other surgeries he preforms--he's primarily a general surgeon and can handle any type of problem) and the fact that he doesn't make you feel as if you are in a cattle shute and being run through things as fast as possible, just so he can add another statistic to his long list of accomplishments, definitely makes up for being a little rough around the edges. He also stress right up front that this is NOT a surgery he will preform just for vain reasons it has to be medically necessary. His associates and office staff and been very helpful, a little slow in the insurance process but I'm betting that's the insurance companies fault instead of Dr. Dickerman's office staff. But overall I was and am more than pleased with the care that I've been given by Dr. Dickerman and his staff at this point and I'm sure that that won't change.
Once the insurance papers finally went through I was scheduled for surgery in 5 days and had it on July 8 2002. I can't say enough about the care that Dr Dickerman and his staff provided as well as the care of the nurses on staff, floor 4NE at Methodist. THEY WERE ALL GREAT, I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT HOW FANTASTIC THEY WERE! There were nurses that had already gone through WLS and then there were those that were scheduled to go thru the surgery and Dr Dickerman was/or is going to be their surgeon. Knowing this helped so much they were able to answer questions and give personal experiences and talk about what they went through and were going through. All in all I think choosing Dr Dickerman and Methodist hospital was the best choice that I could have made for myself. I have NOT one regret.

I absolutely loved my surgeon. He changed my life. I felt it was very knowledgable and made me feel at ease from the first time that I saw him. His staff was kind and very efficient and always (and promptly) answered my questions. I had regular appointments with him for one year. I recommended my plastic surgeon. I would recommend him 100%.

My insurance company recommended Dr. Dickerman to me after stating they would not cover my first choice which was the BTC in Wylie, TX. I'm very happy with their recommendation. I felt Dr. Dickerman was very up front and didn't try "candy coat" anything. He explained the possible complications of surgery and good things to come should I decide to have the surgery. His staff, I deal w/ Mary, is wonderful..very caring and always ready to answer any questions. After going home from the hospital, about 2 weeks later I noticed a pain on the left side of my incision...I called the office and they got me in right away...turns out I have a small hernia due to some vomiting after surgery...nothing major, but he wants to monitor. Dr Dickerman only takes afternoon appointments and is in surgery during the morning hours...his staff is always there if you need anything. When talking to me about the risks of surgery he was very honest...he wants all his patients to know what to expect. I would rate him as an excellent surgeon who loves what he does.
