Surgery Specialty Hospitals of America Bariatric Center

My first impression of him was that he was well educated on the procedure he will be preforming on me. He made me feel very comfortable. His staff is very laid back and have also gone through the surgery. He has a very structured aftercare program and has an affiliation with NuWeigh which is a support group that meets on certain days of the week. I would recomend him highly. The one downside is that he is only in the office on Tuesdays and it is usually standing room only. He see's his post-op and pre-op on that day only. Also, he only preforms surgery on Mondays at Bellaire Hosp.

I first went to Dr Alanis after my cardiologist diagnosed me with heart arrythmia in April of 2002. I met with him, we talked for a while about my family and my medical history....he is very good at putting you at ease...and also very good about not lying to you. He told me straight out what the major risks were, most of this scared me and almost made me change my mind. I thought he should be trying to "sell" the surgery to me, but instead he was quite graphic about what could happen. As part of the surgery, he asks that all his patients attend a weekly support meeting, these meetings are not manditory, but he does STRONGLY suggest them. He also gives you a schedule for your aftercare visits so that you knoww when you have to come back for check ups.
The one thing that I didnt like about him is that if you have an appointment at 3:15 you dont even get seen until after 5. I was there for over 3 hours my last pre-op visit.
But, I have to say, that of all the people that I have met that have had the surgery, I and other Dr Alanis patients have the best incisions. Mine looks like a scratch more than a cut.(I had the open surgery). It looks like it's going to heal without leaving much of a scar behind.
If I had to do this all over again..I would use Dr Alanis again!!!

My first impression of Dr. Alanis was that he was quite and needed to be prodded for information. As I have come to know him his bedside maner he is WONDERFUL!!!! I was as to be expected very nervous but he makes you very comfortable. I though my family would put him over the edge but he answered all their questions no matter how many( and believe me there were alot). He is very patient and kind. The aftercare is very important and he does stress that. Unlike many surgeons I researched if you have a problem you seek help from him not your PCP and that is an importact factor. I became ill 8 wks after surgery when I called his office they had me come straight in and I was admitted directly to the hospital. By the way it was not complications from surgery, I had a viral infection that causes severe nausea and vomiting. He admitted me to hospital gave me IV fluids for dehydration did an EGD to check the pouch and when I was better sent me home. His office staff are all former patients so they know exactly how you feel. If you ever have a question or concern all you have to do is call the office. I had a very good experience and would definitly recommend Dr. Alanis.

Dr. Alanis is the most animated doctor I have ever met. The first time I met him, he was so excited to be able to help me loose weight. He's very informative. He drew pictures of the surgery, and explained exactly what will happen. He went over my medical history, told me what I should and shouldn't do to prepare for surgery, and emphasized exercise (walking) right after surgery and through the recovery process. I would give him a definate thumbs up when it comes to bedside manner, and expertise on the subject of bariatric surgerys.
Now NeWeight on the other hand, pretty much sucks. I have to admit they do help alot of people, but the people who work there aren't that nice. My experiences with them have left me hanging and wondering. They run around that office like they are too busy to stop and speak to you. They don't treat you like the "little sister/brother" they claim to do, and if I had this to do over, yet once again, I'd certainly do it on my own without their help.

I felt very comfortable with Dr. Alanis. He was very friendly and informative. I was the last consult and it was getting late, so I didn't get to spend as much time talking to him as I wanted, however, I have been so thorough in my research and asking questions (I call Neweigh often) until I felt satisfied with the consult. He did stress all the risks involved and drew a diagram of the surgery. Aftercare is a must and I had to sign a statement agreeing to participate in the after care program. I believe I'm in good hands.
I am more in love with Dr. Alanis than when I first met him. He is a very competent surgeon who is compassionate and God fearing. He is very caring and takes time to listen to me. I ended up in the emergency room a week after I was released from the hospital because I thought my stitches were coming apart. He came to see about me personally and took good care of me. He is a great supporter and doesn't make me feel bad that I needed to have surgery to lose weight. He is the best. I highly recommend him. He also does very neat work and leaves you with a minimal scar that heals beautifully.
