William S. Peters, D.O. FACS Bariatric Center

I have my initial appt set up. This is after talking to him for over one hour on the phone. He contacted me through this site to offer to answer any questions, this was without any pressure to use him as a surgeon. I am a Pediatrician and found him to be down to earth and easy to talk too long before he knew I was in the medical profession.
He is even better in person. Described surgery and complications very clearly. Sent me home to research RY vs DS. Eagerly awaiting 2nd visit. Robbie had all the information that was faxed to her ready for the visit.
Safely through the surgery. I couldn't have asked for a more skilled and caring physician
during this whole process.

When I first visited Dr. Peters last week, he tried to tell me that I didn't need the surgery. He said that he would get surgery to look like me!!! Now I found that very funny since I am 345 lbs, but I am young and I am 6'3" and I guess I carry (hide) it well. I liked the fact that he was very honest right away. He gives you the option of 3 different surgeries, the VBG, the RNY, and the Duodenal switch. He tells you the risks and advantages of each one. He is very straightforward and I appreciate it. He is also very patient, he took oever an hour to sit and answer all my questions. He wife is very sweet and also very helpful. I felt very comfortable with Doctor Peters and have a very good first impression of him.

My first impression of Dr. Peters was one of a very compasionate man who care about people with obesity problems. After my second appiontment and talking to him I was a true believer in him. Robbie is GREAT! Also a very caring person. Anyone wanting to make an appiontment with him will find he pulls no punches with you. You get the crap scared out of you, only to make sure you are really sure you want to have this surgery. I have been to a dietitican, Marie, at CMC who is very nice. After surgery and even if your thinking of surgery. Dr. Peters has a support group meeting once a month. What surprised me was that he was actually there. And afterwards going to the car he spen another 3/4 of an hour talking to me and a freind that went with me. His overall rating of Dr. Peters and Robbie are 10+++.
I wait for the phone to ring with an approval! And poor Robbie....I will try not to call her everyday....maybe every other day.....lol........

first impression is very strait forward. his wife is the only office staff I know and is always helpful.Right now I have been well informed and mentally ready.WELL I AM ten days post-op already i am losing about one pound or more a day. DR.PETERS has been a very caring and professional.THIS is now in my hands.LIKE the doctor and I know you do not win all the time but without trying are best we will never find the end of the forest.

The first thing Dr. Peters said to me was "I'm going to be candid with you -- I don't sugar-coat anything!" That's exactly what I needed to hear -- a doctor who puts all the cards on the table. He is upfront and honest about the possible risks and complications. He told me that I will be making the ultimate choice about which surgery to have (he does VBG, RNY and DS). I liked him instantly, because he was telling me the truth, and not just what he thought I wanted to hear. I've seen him twice (once with my husband) and I went to his support group as well. There were 50 people in the room, and every one of them (pre, post and non-op)has nothing but respect and affection for him. His wife/assistant Robbie is also terrific -- she's very sensitive and caring, and quite reassuring about my concerns (particularly regarding insurance). Regarding aftercare, his comment was "I'm yours, whenever you need me". He makes himself available 24/7 to his post-ops, responds very quickly to emails and phone calls, and will not be operating on me until he's sure I know EVERYTHING about my surgery (he gives a written test to check knowledge level). Overall, I think he's the best kind of surgeon there is. If you're looking for someone to pat you on the hand and say, "Everything's going to be fine", forget it. If you want the truth, and are planning to make an investment in your own future, he's the man! As for surgical competence or bedside manner, I can't yet say, but I think they're both important aspects of this process. However, I believe that surgical competence edges out bedside manner in the big picture. I'd rather be operated on by a fine surgeon with a brusque bedside manner than someone who's all sweetness and light, but not on the right page, surgically.

8/12/01 My first impression of Dr. Peters was that he is a man of compassion and knowledge. I had been to another surgeon and had had my surgery cancelled one week before I was due to have it and in desperation searched for another surgeon. Thank God for Dr. Peters and Robbie, his office manager. I was so upset and stressed when I called his office and Robbie got me in that very same day. Dr. Peters went thoroughly over all the aspects of the surgery and the post-op period and was so gracious about fitting me in. He really treated me like a human being and with such dignity. He took into account the things going on in my personal life and made sure that I was worked into his surgery schedule quickly. Robbie truly is a miracle worker - before I left the office that day I had new insurance approval and pre-certification and a new surgery date for only 2 weeks later than my first. But that wasn't good enough for her - she spent loads of time trying to find a sooner date and called me later that afternoon and offered me the following Monday!!! I was stunned!! My husband and I both started to cry. She was just as excited as we were I think. Another thing that really impressed me was Dr. Peters had me take a test to be sure I understood everything about the risks and post-op. I also liked the fact that he was open and honest and didn't act like he was offering a magic pill but stressed that I would have to work to make this work. Overall - I'm delighted with the fact that my first surgery was cancelled and I was able to place myself in Dr. Peters care.

Dr. Peters is wonderful. He tells it like it is.Robbie in Dr. Peters office is so nice and made me feel so comfortable at my first appointment I was scared to death I had no idea what to expect. Dr. Peters addressed the risk of surgery and everything that could happen. The risk is worth it though because there's a risk being like this.
