I had already heard about Dr. Chua from my friend trish. She had the lapband put on in Mexico before it was approved here. She now goes to Dr. Chua. He is a very very nice man. I have the utmost faith in him and my opinion has not changed.
His staff has been most accomadating. When ever I have called they have been kind enough to let me know whats up. I was quite impatient and it seemd to take them forever to submit to insurance but then I dont work in that field so I dont know what that all entails. It took 1 month from the appointment to get my insurance submitted. well worth the wait I was approved in 8 days.
Yes he has a aftercare program. Yes he explained risks etc. I learned from trish too that there is a support group on the net. which is good because I live in the sticks. 2 hours to milwaukee. well thats all I have to say now good luck

Dr. Chua is a very quiet and friendly man.
I enjoyed and learned a lot at the
Informational seminar. His talk answered
most of my questions and when my husband and
I met with Dr. Chua for my first consultion
he answered the rest.
My impression has only inproved over time.
His office staff is great!
The aftercare program so far as been very
good.
When addressing the risks of surgery I feel
he was very honest and straight forward.
He is an excellent Surgeon and have
recommended him to many other Obesity people.
Surgical competence and bedide manner are
great.

Dr.Chua seemed to be pretty nice. I only saw him once so I have not changed my impression. At first I felt that one member of the staff was overwhelmed with the work she had to do and I had to do a lot of work on my own, which I did not mind doing because it is my surgery but I found out that she is no longer at the office and I think it runs better. Patients should know that he doesn't take a lot of time with you initially. I was told that they do have a support group. He didn't really address the risks of surgery but I have researched it and knew them already. Overall, I can only rate Dr. Chua based on entries by others and so far he seems to be okay.
Now that I have had my surgery and have interacted with Dr. Chua, I found him to be a very good doctor, who is professonal and knows his business. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to have this surgery. His Assistant Deb Acker is good as well. The anesthesiologist and his nurse were good. There was no pain in trying to find my veins, which I thought was great based on previous experience. I can't think of their names right now but once I get them I will post them. Dr. Chua's surgical nurse was good too. They were all very professional. I do have a concern about my first post op visit, they did not take my blood pressure or temperature or anything. The only thing they did was weigh me. I also thought that I would have blood work done, but this did not happen. I will probably go to my PCP to have this done.

To be quite honest, the only time that I have met Dr. Chua was at a conference on the lap-band. I have not yet had an apointment with him and I was told very rudely byoe of his staff members that I coldn't meet him or receive an appointment until my insurance sent over an approval letter.
As of 01/31/03, I was denied for the lap-band procedure. So, now I have to work with Dr. Chua's office directly in hopes of getting an approval for the RNY.
*Here's a bit of advice to anyone considering the lap-band, read your benefit handbook from your insurance and call them and ask about that particular procedure!* I was told by my insurance company that it would be denied because it was exerimental. I passed this info onto the 1-800 number-weight for life people- and they sent the letter anyway. The weight for life office is based in California and work not only for Dr. Chua but also for the Inamed Co. which makes the lap-band. Weight for Life can not help you if you choose not to have the lap-band. You will have to contact Dr. Chua's Office directly and work with them, which can be nerve wrecking. I was told to call back three times before anyone would answer my questions. Finally I was told that since I had been trying for the band,I had missed two important steps in the approval process-Psych eval. and nutritionist appointment--these appointments come after yo approval in the lap-band process.
I now have to wait until 03/21/03 to see the shrink, and then wait another wek for the results and then another 5 to 30 days for insurance approval to find out if I can see Dr. Chua and have surgery! Good Luck to those of you in the same boat...

I WENT TO DR CHUA'S SEMINAR ON OCT 16 2002, WITH MY HUSBAND. BECAUSE OF INSURANCE CHANGE THRU WORK I COULDN'T SEE HIM UNTIL AFTER THE NEW YEAR. I FINALLY MET WITH HIM ON JAN 30 2003. I WAITED ONE HOUR AND TWENTY MINUTES PAST MY SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT TIME. IN THE WAITING ROOM PRIOR TO APPT OTHER PRE AND POST OP PATIENTS WERE DISCUSSING THEIR SURGERIES AND WT LOSS, THEY WERE HELPFUL AND VERY OPEN, IT WAS A VERY NICE TIME FILLER.
DR CHUA WAS VERY NICE AND ANSWERED ALL MY QUESTIONS,, ONE OF MY QUESTIONS WAS IF THERE WERE ANY NEW OR UPCOMING WLS OR TECHNIQUES COMING SOON ,,, UNFORTUNATLY NO. I FINALLY GOT TO HOLD THE LAP BAND AND IT WAS SMALLER THAN I IMAGINED. VERY FLEXABLE AND PLYABLE. HE EXPLAINED ALL THE FACTS, THE WL RESULTS HE EXPECTED FROM ME, WHAT I NEEDED TO CURB IN MY DIET AND WHAT I SHOULD DO PRIOR TO SURGERY. I LEFT KNOWING THAT HE WAS THE RIGHT SURGEON FOR ME AND THAT THE LAP BAND WAS THE RIGHT SURGERY FOR ME.
THE OFFICE STAFF SEEMS OK, I HAD CALLED HIS OFFICE 5 DAYS LATER TO SEE IF THEY HAD SENT OUT THE REQUEST TO MY INSURANCE AND THEY HAD NOT, IT SEEMED TO ME THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE BY NOW. OTHER WLS PEOPLE WHO HAVE MY SAME INSURANCE KNEW WITHIN TWO WEEKS IF THEY WERE APPROVED OR DENIED. AFTER WAITING THREE MONTHS TO SEE DR CHUA I JUST THOUGHT MY INFORMATION SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE MAIL ALREADY. THEY DID EXPLAIN THAT THEY HAVE A LOT OF NEW PATIENTS AND WERE RUNNING BEHIND,,, NOT SOMETHING I WANTED TO HEAR.
ALL AND ALL I WOULD GO BACK TO SEE HIM. PLEASE KNOW IF YOU'R READING THIS TO SEE IF DR CHUA IS RIGHT FOR YOU, THAT I DIDN'T SEE ANY OTHER DR FOR THIS SURGERY, DR CHUA IS IN MY NETWORK WITH FIRST HEALTH, HAD I KNOWN ANY OTHER DOCTORS TO CONSULT WITH I MIGHT HAVE DONE SO.

2/2/03 I had surgery Wednesday. Dr. Chua came in to see me beforehand assured me that he would take care of me. He came to see me breifly on the other days that I was in the hospital. He did not need to spend a lot of time with me because my surgery was not complicated. This is a testimony to his skill, since I have a BMI of 76, which can often make things difficult.
11/7/02 I had my first meeting with Dr. Chua today. I chose him because he has an excellent reputation and many years of experience. His main concern seemed to be that I am a self pay patient. He also asked tons of ?'s about my family's history of MO. (I guess he wants to know whether I have a genetic condition or am just a gluttonous pig.) There was not a lot of discussion about the surgery itself. Since my BMI is over 70, I knew a long time ago that my only option is distal Roux-en-Y with an open incision. Dr. Chua confirmed this.So far I have had no problems with the office staff. They are very nice. They are also extremely busy. When I went for my first appointment, I looked at the sign-in sheet and saw that Dr. Chua had appointments scheduled every 20 minutes. I guess that he is trying to help as many people as possible.

Dr. Chua,
What a wonderful surgeon! You know how some individuals you feel you have known a long time. Well, that is how I feel about Dr. Chua. He was very personable, very warm individual. Everyone is sent to this world with a purpose and Dr. Chua has found his! He did a wonderful job on my incision. In a few years I don't even think you will see the scar much. He came in every day to see me and this was over the Christmas Holiday. He wasn't in a hurry as he spoke with me in my hospital bed. He even tracked me down once as I was walking around the halls. I feel very fortunate that he is the one who did my surgery. Blessings come in many different ways. I sincerely believe that the man upstairs helped me find this man, guided me right to him. Thank you Dr. Chua!

MY FIRST IMPRESSION WAS MY BEST IMPRESSION, I LOVED HIM FROM DAY ONE, HE WAS VERY CONCERNED AND VERY CARING,HE ASKED ME WHAT I WANTED AND THEN TOLD ME WHAT HE THOUGHT I NEEDED, AND I'M PLEASED TO SAY WE WERE ON THE SAME WAVE LINK. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED HIS OFFICE STAFF WHEN I WAS GOING THROUGH THE PROCESS STAGE. I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT THERE WAS NOTHING I DID'NT LIKE ABOUT DR.CHUA. FOR FUTURE PATIENTS I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM WITH OUT DOUBT.HE THROUGHLY EXPLAINED EVERYTHING TO ME BEFORE AND AFTER SURGERY,AND ANYTHING HE DID'NT COVER I ASKED AND HE WAS ABLE TO ANSWER TO MY LIKING.HE TELLS YOU ABOUT ALL OF THE RISKS UP UNTO THE MORNING OF SURGERY.
I RATE DR.CHUA TOP OF THE LINE SURGEON.
I WAS ESPECIALLY IMPRESSED WITH THE FACT THAT HE CAME TO TALK WITH ME BEFORE I WENT DOWN TO SURGERY AND REASSURED ME THAT HE WOULD TAKE CARE OF ME, WHICH SET MY HEART AT EASE. THEN NOT A DAY WENT PASS THAT HE DID'NT MAKE SURE HE CAME AND SEEN ME HE EVEN CAME ONE NIGHT AT ABOUT 11P.M. AND SAID HE HAD BEEN IN SURGERY ALL DAY, SO THAT EXPLAINS WHY I FEEL THE WAY I DO ABOUT DR.CHUA.

My first impression of Dr. Chua was that he was very soft spoken, patient, gentle and caring. He took his time to answer all of my questions. He's very knowledgeable. His office staff was very helpful. Although they made me a little nervous when I initial went to the office and they couldn't find my chart. Overall a very good experience so far.
