Arnulfo Agbunag Bariatric Surgeon M.D.

My first appt with Dr A. I was unable to see him because the pschy consult was recieved and after severl attempts and hours we were unable to get it faxed so my appt had to be rescheduled. Every thing went well at the next appt. I liked Dr. A very well. He took his time im anserwing all my questions. and was very imformative with procedure and post op restrictions told me what paper work to get and in less than a week my surgery was schduled and approved by my insurance company. I still have some question but i am sure they will be all answered at my next appt. prior to surgery

My first impression of him was that he seems serious about what he does.
I am reserving my impression of him just yet, I have only seen him one time.
Martha the person that answers his phone and takes the information is such a nice person, she is awsome.
I am not sure about his aftercare just yet.
He addressed all the issues of my being a high risk for surgery since I have had a bypass before and a takedown and a hernia repair, but I already knew this.
I think he is very knowledgable in his field.
I think I was most impressed with his knowledge than anything, but as I say I have only seen him once.
The only thing that weights heavy on my mind about him is during the conversation we had on the phone after my initial visit was him telling me it would probably take up to a year to get the insurance approval for payment of the surgery, if they ever did, but he suggested I could pay cash.

12/15/02 Today is Sunday the day before I was suppose to have my first vist with the surgeon, but Martha from the surgeons office called me Friday at work to confirm the appointment and to check on some last minute things, and wouldn't you know when she asked about some reports she did not have, my primary care physician's office did not set me up for the upper and lower GI that is required before you see this doctor but I do not think; well let me rephrase that, I know it was not my doctor but her staff member that does the referrels, who did not schedule these tests as she also did not send a copy of the letter my primary care physican has written in regards to my needing the surgery nor did she send the psych eval, so here I sit feeling depressed at the incompetence of people in the positions of control over something so important in someone's life not just mine but it makes me wonder what has she not done for other people and has she caused some people to die because of her oversites. I tried to stay on top of her by calling and speaking with her often, I would ask her are you sure we have everything done and is there a list form the surgeons office showing what is required, if she had it I don't think she understood it. I don't think she did this on purpose. I do think she tried the best she could but she just does not have the ability to focus on the details. I now have another appointment with the surgeon, thanks to Martha at the surgeons office, for December 23rd, I have to try to get the upper and lower GI done this week and get the results back. Wish me good luck!

Dr. A. was great. Very kind/caring skilled surgeon. His office staff was great. I had called many Drs. offices trying to find a surgeon who took my insurance and I could tell by how they answered the phone that Dr. A. would be the right fit for me. Aftercare is very important and he does require you to keep a log of everything you drink/eat and bring it to your appts. He did discuss everything concerning the surgery with me and because of prior surgeries/scarring I had to have an open procedure. He did explain all of this in detail to me so I was confident in his suggestions. I believe surgical competence is better in a surgeon, but bedside manner does help in recovery.

The doctor was an exellent choice. He has a sense of humor and doesn't accept cheating on our diet-my friend forgot her food journal and he made her go home and get it! I researched his qualifications and received all rave reviews from former patients/current patients. He is meticulous and will be rushed by no one. He involved my husband in the process and has been great. The most negative thing I could say, is that you have to be prepared to wait for your appointment, because of hospital rounds or taking extra time with patients. It's worth the wait. He dealt with the insurance, and had me approved on the first attempt-within 2 weeks! His office called me the day he received approval, and scheduled the surgery. I had been trying since November of last year(with a different doctor)and kept getting the run around. When I heard about Dr. Agbunagh, I never expected to get approval so quickly.

Dr.Agbunag seems to be very caring and very cautious when it comes to your surgery.
From what I understand you have to keep a food journal afterwards and MUST bring it to each visit post-op.
Dr.Agbunag took his time at my consult, I didn't feel rushed or that he wanted to get me in & out as soon as possible, even though he was running late & had a waiting room full of people...

When I went to Dr. Agbunag's office I was so scared. His office staff was very nice. The furniture was comfortable and I did not have to wait long at all. I was very impressed with Dr. A. He was very professional with a very nice personality. I dropped some papers and he even bent over and helped me pick them up. He is putting me through a lot of test but I don't mind because that makes me feel he is real thorough with his patients. When I went for the upper and lower GI series, they were bragging about Dr. A saying he was a very good surgeon and he had done the same surgery on one of their staff. While getting my pulmonary work-up, Dr. Evans also commented what a great surgeon Dr. A is. That makes me feel real good about him. I have a lot of respect for him and feel he will be a strict but very caring surgeon.
