Boyd Terry Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.
I had my first appointment with Dr. Terry 8/15/00. He answered all my questions and concerns. I also met with the nutritionist and she was very helpful. Susan, Dr. Terry's nurse,
took my history and a physical exam.
I liked everything except how long it took. I was there 4 1/2 hours. But it was worth it because I have a surgery date of 11/17/00. I am so excited!
Dr. Terry emphasized the importance of lifestyle changes and aftercare. There is a support group meeting once a month and he usually attends. I've been going since May and you learn a lot.
Overall, he is great. It takes a long time to get things rolling, but once he accepts you as a candidate for surgery things start happening.
I had my 9 month follow-up in August and I've lost 115 pounds
Dr Terry looks like your grandpa a short elderly white haired man. My first impression was just that, he looks like grandpa. But the man does the job and does it well I seen him a year ago March and had surgery july 11th. There are 2 doctors in Junction City,Ks I started talking to them and basically was told to loose wieght and call them back ???? If I could I would not be wanting the surgery. So I trusted what I was told about Dr Terry and dove in head first and it's done and I'm starting over. The staff is great the hospital is on the University of Mo campus. Rate Dr Terry no he does a job and in my oppion he did a good job. Is he right for you ?? He does the very Large were most won't so you talk to him or find one closer , I found 2 but then I thought hmm they are new he has done this for years and thats why I stayed with him I put my life in Gods hands and he worked his way throught Dr Terry
My first impression of Dr. Terry was his calm reassuring manner and expertise in bariatric surgery. My impression only increased in a positive way. How many physicians do you know that donate their time to a support group of obese and once obese people? I came to learn he is a wonderful humanitarian as well as being so skillful a surgeon. Dr Terry's staff are warm and knowlwdge able. His nurse practitioner is top notch. I think being a RN myself I know what to look for and they go beyond good. I have found nothing to dislike in my surgeon. Future patients should know they will recieve the best care possible. Aftercare is extremely important and emphazied. The after care is stuctured, I see Dr. Terry once every three months more if needed, also the support group is encouraged. He was honest and forthright about possible risks both during preliminary visits and support groups. He answers all questions put to him about risks. Overall I rate him extremely high. HIs bedside manner and surgical competence are superb.
The first time I met Dr. Terry, he
was very quiet and thoughtful.
Little did I realize how absolutely
wonderful he was. He cares about
the littlest details, even your
comfort and emotions. As he gets
to know you, his true depth of
"friendship" with you shines through.
He will remember the smallest
details of your last visit (months
ago) and ask about it. He is extremely
humble and a little shy. His right
hand nurse, Susan, is almost as
wonderful as Dr. Terry. Unfortunately,
I can't say as much for the office
(paperwork) structure or the hospital.
It would appear the secretary (a
hospital employee) is overwhelmed by
her workload and does not follow up
well at all. In my experience, the
cleanliness at the hospital was
lacking and the nurses needed a
better understanding of the surgery
in order to provide better support,
primarily physically. You get the
best of both with Dr. Terry, competence
AND bedside manner!
One of the most Kind caring Dr's I have ever met...He is certainly an angel of God ...I am so happy I was led to him for this procedure...I don't see him much these days [I am doing great] however I will remember him forever.....
I highly recommend him ...though the wait for him is long...His expertise is well worth the wait...You would never regret it if you choose this DR....go meet him your self and see...He genuinly cares for the Obese and is always willing to help ..
He is what I call a REAL DR....I as a nurse have met many but this one is worth his wt in gold....He saved my life in more ways than one...If you are reading this DR TERRY let me publicly say to you ....THANKS....and I LOVE YOU..[in a respectible way of course]
Do I have anything negative to say about him...NO ....!
Dr. Terry was a soft spoken man. Listen to everything I had to say very intently. He had very kind comments to make to me. Almost made me cry. I just felt like he really cared and that he could help me. He answered all my questions. His staff was very nice. Met with the Dietitian, Janet Woodside, RN. Very imformative and answered all questions. I really liked the fact that they have a support group and was encouraged to attented the meetings.
The only complaint so far was the long wait to see him and trying to get appointments for inital visit. Busy office (thanks for the TV in waiting room)
I had my surgery on 8/2/00.
Dr. Terry came to check on me twice a day in the hospital...he is a good listener and I feel so confident in is abilities as a surgeon. One thing that I really noticed too was that all the nurses at the University Hospital have such respect for him. I think that is so important too.
Hate to say this was a breeze..but I came though the surgery just fine..have had very little pain...I think Dr. Terry and the staff at University Hospital are great!
Dr. Terry in Columbia is a wonderful and caring man. I have the utmost respect for him as surgeon. I am eagerly awaiting the new beginning to my life that he will give me on October 6, 2000.
great first impression/
my impression only has gotten better over time/
good staff/
very busy office/
he has a long waiting list/
I take that as a sign of how good he is!/
offers monthly support group meetings, most of which Dr. Terry attends/
he explains things very well and he ALWAYS draws on the exam table paper!/
I give him five stars*****
(or should you not rate a bariatric surgeon the same way that you rate restaurants!)/
Okay, if I have to say something negative, I will say that he usually keeps patients waiting, sometimes for hours. But he is a busy man and worth the wait!
Dr Terry is very easy to talk to. It took me about 7 weeks to get appointment, he is a very busy surgeron but, it was worth the wait. I fill that he has a good bed side manner and unlike some Doctor's he listens to my fears and reasons why i wanted surgery done.
Dr terry staff is very easy to talk to as well, there was this one nurse in general i don't know her name but, she sat down with me and told about her surgery she had 20 years ago, very informative she said wls has come a long ways sent she had it.
Just remember that Columbia is a teaching hospital and that Dr Terry is a teacher as well as a surgeon, not are you learning something from your visit with him so is a intern and other staff.
WE haven't discussed a whole lot about aftercare but, he is very strong on joining the support group before and after. He said we would discuss things closer to time. I now have been to my first support group meeting and Dr. Terry is at these meetings he answers all questions and concerns he teachs little tricks to help you get ready for wls like a how to cough so that doesn't hurt as bad after surgery. He is just so, special and caring.
There is always possiblity of risk with any surgerial procedurer.
It's really hard to rate a person on a one time visit but, so far i'll give him 99%.
There is only one person who rates a 100% and that is the LORD.
Both surgical competence and bedside manner is a plus for all doctors.
I find Dr. Terry to be a very sweet, compassionate man, who seems to care about his patients. I've only met him 3 times, but I liked him right away. He attends a monthly support group-and the people who have already had surgery by him LOVE him.
His staff is also very informative and friendly. They take time, as he does, to answer questions, and offer suggestions.
Overall, I am very confident that I will be in excellent hands when I undergo surgery. They do have a structured after care program, a monthly support group... which, by the way, is planning to start a clothing exchange program so people won't have to keep buying new clothes as they lose weight.
As I stated before, I've only met him 3 times. I don't know what they will be like during or after surgery. So far, my only complaint is it took an awful long time to get scheduled in-3 and a half years! But I understand, because he is also the director of the burn unit, and emergencies happen.
