Dr Oelschlager is aces in my book. Reputed to be the best surgeon to revamp a failed fundoplication, he suggested the RNY reconstruction to ensure that weight loss would keep the GERD at bay. I was amazed that such a young man had already published so many papers regarding esophageal and gastric surgery. He is courteous, professional, and communicates clearly without mincing words.

His office staff, in particular, Ethan, Patient Care Coordinator, is fabulous! Ethan and I had to persuade my insurance company that the procedure was necessary for my health, a difficult task that resulted in 3 separate surgery dates while waiting for approval. But we were successful and so was the surgery!

There is a strong emphasis on before- and after-care and a program in place for bariatric patients. Since I was a surgical patient, I was not able to avail myself of all they offer, though I was able to meet with the nutritionist twice.

In my opinion, I would rather have surgical competence over bedside manner, although Dr O and his fellows all do well in both aspects. I found him and them to be excellent physicians and helpful and informative throughout the entire process.

Dr. Oelschlager is GREAT. This is my second time seeing him for RNY and he truly cares. The program to me has got better since I 1st seen him. I know I am good hands. The program is structured and offers great pre-op and after-care to individuals that want it. My surgeon is a young doctor with a winning personality and good bedside manor. The surgery has been explained to multiply times and then he followed up to make sure I completely understood. I would reccommend.

My first impression of Dr Oelschlager was a very good one. He answered all of the questions I had for him. He informed me of all of the different thing that could happen. Dr Oelschlager's office of workers were the best I've ever experienced. They were all so friendly and helpfu. They went out of there way to help me get all of the appointments I've needed.. If you are looking at have Dr Oelschlager as a doctor you are making a good choice. If I had to rate him of 1 - 10 then I would say that he is a 9.5 right now. And I'm sure that his rating will go up once I've had the surgery.

He was to the point and talked first but at the end he wanted to hear from the patient. I thought this is great he cares. He did he sat and listened and did not look at his watch once. He gave me his full time.

Bed side matter was great. He checked on me a number of times and we talked about what I needed to talk about, he let me do the talking. Which was nice I had a ton of questions. I like the fact that he tells you the truth and does not hide anything. I enjoy seeing him because of this.

I had only one bad time with this hospital and really it has nothing to do with the hospital and its staff. My doctors, my nurses and everyone else was great. NOW if only this weight would leave.

Rate him on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best) HUGE 10+ if any of my friends need this done this is where I would tell them to go.
3 weeks after! I have lost about 30 pounds and I feel GREAT! Thanks Dr. O

Let me add on, I am now 8 weeks out and I have lost 47 lbs! I hope to double this in the next 3 months.

When I first met Dr.Oelschlager, I thought he was very understanding and seemed to really care.He answered all my questions and was very helpful.
For the most part his office staff was very helpful and friendly, I just had 1 Bad experience when I was waiting to find out if my insurance was going to cover this, his nurse got mad at me for calling because my surgery wasn't scheduled for several months and all I wanted to know was if I had been approved so I could make flight arraingments for my mom.I havent been to there office in a couple months but I go next Thursday.

I had all my preop testing done at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix. I could not find a surgeon in Seattle. I was scheduled for surgery in Phoenix on Oct 29,2002 when I was informed that in addition to my insurance, I would be charged $20,000!! I asked them if they were crazy! So I said no thanks and came back to Seattle. In the meantime, my personal physician had found Brant Oelschlager at the University of Washington. Normally, there can be up to a one year wait for an appointment. But because all of my testing was done, he saw me. He ran 2 additional tests and scheduled my surgery. The University of Washington is a PPO, so I will only pay my deductible.
Dr Oelschlager is young, friendly and competent. His staff is great. I have only seen him 3 times, so I do not know him well. First impressions are very good. He has not talked to me about aftercare yet.

Yes people there is another doctor in the Seattle area that accepts TRICARE!!!

My opinions after my initial visit....take them for what they're worth.

Dr. Oelschlager is professional and to the point. He answered all my questions and brought up points I hadn't thought of. He was brief - so I think it helped that I had prepped my questions beforehand.

The offic staff was friendly even though I was late (yuck!) but they made it work. I did wind up waiting, but considering I was late I wasn't too worried about it.

What you should know... take your history with you. Espcially your co-morbidities and what your entire diet history and weights have been to the best of your recollection.

The better informed you are beforehand the easier the initial consult will go.

Dr. Oelschlager has serious issues with doing surgery on smokers. If you are a smoker this might be a problem (wasn't for me - cuz I don't :))

Care includes pre and post op visits with a nutritionist as needed.

My only negative is the interview I did with the medical student before actually seeing Dr. O... he was a nice guy, but I felt like I had to repeat a lot of stuff.

Dr. O seems like a good guy with a good system. We'll see if my initial opinion holds true.

Oh, another negative - find the place and parking was a pain when I was already freaking out from being late. Plan around traffic!!

I first saw Dr. Oelschlager in July, '02 He was very nice, had a good sense of humor, and didn't sugar coat. He is young, does only lap, and is non-judgemental.

I saw him and his assistant once in January. He was very forthcoming about all the bennifits and risks. He talked to me at length. He said that I fit the profile perfectly and wanted me to have the surgery my in surance denied me as I had had no tests to show my co-morbiditys. I have recently been diagnosed with reflux, had knee surgery and carpal tunnel surgery in both hands. I have a sleep apnea test on the 22 and 23 of July. After that I am hoping to go back to Dr. Oelschlager and be approved for surgery.
