He spent the first ten years of his practice performing general and bariataric surgery with Dr.'s Warren Bower and Victor Wilson, both who learned bariatric surgery directly from Ed Mason, M.D., the "father" of modern bariatric surgery. The obesity surgery program at GRMC, founded by Dr. Bower, was one of the first in the country. Dr. Coster also peforms plastic and reconstructive surgeries after bypass weight loss, including "belt lipectomy" (body lift), thigh-plasty, and brachioplasty (excess arm skin removal).
