I would have to say that he is very quiet and quick to finish you apt., however he is the best surgeon I have ever had. I had my surgery and was out the next day with very little pain. My scars from my gastric bypass are so tiny. I'm very happy with my results.

I was referred to Dr. Thoman by my neighbor who is an anesthesiologist at the hospital. I figure he should know better then anyone. He told me there are now 2 other surgeons that Dr. Thoman trained doing weight loss surgery, Dr. Bounwa and Zerey. He says neither of them ever picked it up well. It takes them 3 times as long and they have a lot of screw ups. He told me Dr. Thoman was the best laparoscopic surgeon he had ever seen and this guy has been around! Everything went great for me and I couldn't be happier. He's not real chatty, but who cares. He was very nice and I thought spent a reasonable amount of time with me. I don't need hand holding I need the best skills.

I went back to Dr. Thoman for revision surgery. This meant that I was having the lap band removed and the gastric sleeve procedure done instead. Dr. Thoman is an excellent surgeon and I trust him completely. I recommend him without reservations.

I have found Dr. Thomas to be very knowledgeable about both the Lap Band procedure and the Gastric Bypass Procedure. He makes you feel comfortable because he is very informative and calm. He gives a seminar on the advantages of weight loss surgery for anyone interested. I felt very reassured and convinced after attending this seminar. My surgery went well and my aftercare up until now has also been quite satisfactory, with office visits and nutritional counseling. I am extremely happy I found Dr. Thoman and was able to have the Lap Band surgery. It has made a huge difference in my life! Thank you, Dr. Thoman! :))

Still love Dr. Thoman.
I used him for my bi-lateral inguinal hernia repair a few weeks ago. I drove over 4 hours round trip to have him be my surgeon even though this is a routine surgery a local surgeon could have done. I really like Dr. Thoman , his staff and most importantly his surgical experience. I have minimal scaring and bruising.
Yes, he is fast, yes he is still quiet but I like him a lot and get a kick out of his bedside manner now. I will use Dr. Thoman for any surgeries I need that he is capable of doing!

Dr. Thoman is a great surgeon. My surgery went well. My recovery was great with very minimal scarring and bruising. I went to him because of his great surgical skills and I am not dissapointed. His office staff has always been professional and answered my question in a timely fashion. Helpful with surgical paperwork and insurance. I am writting this after my 6 month check up.

If you are looking for a surgeon whom is going to be you best friend, give you high fives when you come in the office or if you are someone who likes their "hand held" when you are going through this experience, then I would look somewhere else.
Don't get me wrong. I would go to him again in a heart beat. I will recommend him to others. I am just not someone whom needs the above listed things.
He is a surgeon and he cares about the patient but it seems he is there to see how that aspect went and then to move on. I would'nt say he has a bad bedside manner just a quite man whom seems to have his niche in the surgical aspect as opposed to the human aspect. Yes , I know we are humans that he is operating on but we are not his "kids" or family so from him, just don't expect coddeling.
He is direct and to the point and that is what I am looking for. Would it be nicer if he had a different bedside manner, sure. It would be nice to hear a more upbear congrats and keep up the good work but my surgery it doing well and it's a success so I know I am doing good work.
So bottom line a great surgeon, good staff, just be your own cheerleader.

I think Dr Thoman is an excellent surgeon, an awesome office staff. I brought a list of questions and he answered every single one and asked if there were any more questions. He is a quiet and very busy surgeon, but I wouldn't confuse this with a bad bed side manner. he has never rushed me, or was ever rude to me or my family or friends. My daughter couldn't be in Santa Barbara for the surgery, so he called her after the surgery was over to tell her I was doing fine and everything went as planned, and asked her if she had any questions. This is a surgeon that the nurses at cottage, and other hospitals go to for WLS, that is how good his reputation is. His record speaks for itself. I would rate him a 10 for skill alone.

Dr Thoman is an excellent surgeon, however he never came out to tell my sister how i did during surgery, or that i was out of the OR. When she tracked him down all he said was 'it went fine' not mentioning that he did a hernia repair. We found this out when it was offhandedly mentioned by an intern.

My pain was very poorly controlled during the first 3 days of my surgery. I was told i would be given a PCA but was not, and the medications wore off before the next dose was due over and over. This misery could easily have been avoided if more attention had been paid to my comfort.

After those first three days i am pleased with my recovery, and i expect to have good long term results.

His office staff is very helpful. The pre op program and post op support is excellent and Dr Thoman/Cottage hospital are a center of excellence.

One more goof up worth mentioning. My DC instructions contained 3 contradictions on when i can bath, and no instructions on 'lifting precautions'. I was not allowed to read the DC instructions before i left 'i am giving you a copy and you can read it later' i was told by the nurse.

Dr. Thomas was very professional and detailed with the procedure. His office staff was always there to anwser all of my quoestions and address my concerns about the surgery. The process of the surgery from diet- post operation treatment is precise and detailed. I would give the whole staff and its partners a great recomendation to a friend, family member, or someone in need of the help that Dr. Thoman was able to provide. Thank you for everything, best wishes.

From pre opt appointment to the days just after surgery Dr Thoman was great. He was very informative and comforting. I would recommend him to anyone interesting in the surgery.

Dr Thoman is a continual professional. His staff is top notch. I like his surgery stats and I would advise others to seek his help. Aftercare is as impotant to Dr Thoman as wls. Dr Thoman informed me of all the risks involved with wls. Pre op on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being perfect, I'd give him a 9 so far, no one is perfect. Both bedside manner and surgical compentence are great, but I will take surgical compentance anyday over bedside manner. I have lots of friends and I'll have a chat with my girlfriends then let Dr Thoman do the wls.

appeared to be very smart! I was a little curious as to why he limits his conversations to his patients, realizing now thats just his bed side manner:) He did great on my surgery and me going home right away! The office staff is very nice, very helpful, and very quick! I like my surgeon!! Future patients do not be alarmed about him not spending a whole lot of time with you, he reviews everything and moves on the his next patient as he is very busy, however you may contact the office at any time! The day I was sent home from the hospital, he did his rounds at the hospital before going to his office, so he did come to see me, that was nice! I rate him a 10! meaning that I have met people like him in the past, actually worked for a pediatrician that is the best!!!! but had no bed side manner what so ever, I must say bed side manners are nice, but not neccessary!
