dcwsdfw Bariatric Surgeon M.D.,F.A.C.S.

Though I liked Dr. Marcus, he was not very good at answering questions for me. I am of the opinion that there were complications they I was not made aware of, despite inquiring. That I didn't need to have. I was given assurance instead of answers. The problematic areas of my treatment are too involved to explain. I do, however, feel they contributed to my putting weight back on as well as my acquiring new health problems. I believe him to be quite competent. What I had a problem with is the way things were dealt with when obvious problems arose. He wasn't very straight forward with me. No one, not even the other patients, would answer me concerning the kinds of lifestyle and health problems that are common with the procedure. I could have dealt with that aspect better if I had been told what to expect, even if it isn't something that happens to everyone.
His staff was very helpful and encouraging. My surgey was in 1996. This is just my impression. Different people have different personalities and therefore have different impressions of situations. This is just my personal impression of my experience. I'm glad the rest of you had positive experiences.

Although not physically impressive, he is a kind, smart and perceptive person. Both he and his staff are sensitive to the needs of "large" people, and treat us with great kindness.
The risks associated with the surgery are detailed in the twice monthly meetings of pre-op and post-op patients. Some have had much trouble due to pre-existing comorbidities. But they all say they would do the surgery again in an instant. I was quite lucky, having a textbook recovery.
Aftercare is highly emphasized. People attend the twice monthly meetings for as long as they want (some for years). The doctor and his staff are ver accessable and approachable.
Both his surgical competance, and bedside manner are great. He also attends the support groups, and afterwards we go out to eat, which is part of the education process.
One must approach the surgery realistically, however. Although I cannot say I was in pain, there was much discomfort, and it took a week in the hospital and two and 1/2 weeks at home with hired help to recover. Major Major Surgery!!I'd do it again in an instant.

Dr. Marcus is a very competent surgeon
and a caring person. His staff did a terrific
job of dealing with the insurance company.
(I had my surgery in 1992.)
I DO NOT believe that the aftercare diet was
emphasized enough at that time. In fact it
was pretty non-existant. I hear that the
practice has changed the approach since then.
He did a good job of addressing the
risks of the surgery.
Both his surgical competence and bedside
manner are very good. My major negative is
that the surgery was not as successful as
I had hoped - he used different lengths of
active intestine for different folks at that
time.

I've met Dr. Marcus several times now and found him to be very laid back and easy going. He is patient about answering questions and he is genuinely concerned about how both the post- and pre-ops are adjusting to either the idea of surgery or to the post surgical regimen. He and his staff emphasize going to the free support meetings strongly, both before and after the surgery. He has a team that includes a fantastic nutrionist, who helps you both before and after the surgery. She helps you get in good nutrtional shape before the surgery to help with healing and to help reduce complications. She also helps with the weight loss regime afterwards and makes herself very available. He has a therapist that he can refer people to if there is a need and she is very knowledgeable about WLS and issues surrounding WLS. There are not enough good things that can be said about Dr. Marcus's office staff. They fight like heck to get insurance approvals and are very sympathetic and patient about answering questions. They are extremely busy at times but they always come through. They attend support group meetings and visit patients in the hospital. They even have an online e-mail support list and have now started an online chat room. There are also swimming and walking programs that patients are just now starting to form. There is a very good team approach to all the aspects of WLS. Dr. Marcus does not just disappear after the surgery. He works really hard after the surgery to make sure everyone has a long term successful outcome.

I called his office yesterday and the lady was really nice. She told me I must go to the support group meeting tomorrow night before they will schedule me for an appointment. So now I am anxiously awaiting tomorrow night. I am terrified that I will not get approved by my insurance company.

I met Dr. Marcus for the first time yesterday. He seems really nice and he cares about people's health. He takes his time explaining things and answering questions and does not make you feel like you have to get out of his office.
I also met the office manager, she helps to get the package together and get you moving in the right directions for approval by your insurance company. They stress healthy living and have you schedule an appointment with a nutritionist. They also have support group meetings that they really stress that you attend. All in all I really was impressed with Dr. Marcus and his office manager.
I have gotten the ball rolling to get the preapproval work done. Now I am just waiting on appointments to actually have all the things done that will go in my insurance package. I have to write a letter describing my lack of quality of life to the insurance company.
I have Alliance PPO, and so I do not have to get referrals from my PCP to get things done.
I just wish all insurance companies would not be able to tell a doctor no to things that the doctor says you need done. That is a pretty screwed up system if you ask me.

My empression for Dr. Marcus was good from
the beggining and still is. He is such a
wonderful man and he understands what I am
going through. He sat down with me and
explained the procedure of the surgery. We
talked about problems I felt I had. He told
me what to expect. His office staff is
also wonderful. They have put up with all of
my questions even though I feel I harrass
I don't mean to) them at times.
I have nothing bad to say about Dr. Marcus he definetly cares.

Dr. Marcus is great. He put me at ease the first time I talked to him. He seems to know the problems of morbid obesity and shows a genuine concern. He has a list of tests that must be completed before his office would send the information to the insurance company. It makes me feel better that he will have the results of these test before performing surgery. He has 35 years of experience and you can tell he knows what he is talking about. He takes time to get to know his patients and has a support group that meets twice a month. Also, his office staff is wonderful. I would recommend him to anyone.
