I've decided to see Dr. Hixson in Saranac Lake. I have my surgical consult with him on Thurs 6/12 and I'll get my surgery date then too.
6/13: I had my consult yesterday with Dr. Hixson. His office was SOOO busy and backed up because he was called to the hospital. Despite how hectic it was there, the staff is always so friendly and professional. I also learned some things from patients that were in the waiting room. Despite being quite far behind schedule, Dr. Hixson was very kind, easy to understand, thorough and did not rush through his time with me. I certainly hope he knows how much his patients love him and appreciate him! He was very patient as I went through my list of questions. I am very confident in his very capable hands. AFtercare is VERY important to him and he addressed all of the risks of surgery. I would rate him a 10 on beside manner and I'm sure his surgery skills will rate the same. My surgery is going to be sometime in October - just waiting on the insurance approval.
My first impression of Dr.Hixson was wonderul. He is a very kind and soft spoken man. He listens to anything you have to say, and is very informative.
His office staff are very helpful, and very respectful of your needs.
After care is a big thing with him, and a little home sapport is needed.
He is a 10 out of 10 definitly!
I was very comfortable with Dr. Hixson the first time I met him. He makes you feel very comfortable and not ashamed of your weight problem at all. His office staff is great, especially his wife Karen. He is very open and honest about he risks involved with surgery and if you are a candidate or not. I would recommend him to anyone interested in bariatric surgery,
I haven't meet him yet. I have my initial consultation set up for March 25/03 with his wife Karen - Nurse Practioner. They told me I would be there for 2.5 hours. I did find out my Blue Cross Blue Shield Utica-Watertown does cover the surgery....just need documentation from the doctor. Under my policy I found out that I don't need a pre-approval; if the doctor can document everything that they need there is no problem. I will keep you posted as things unfold...I have only just begun my journey!
After having met with Karen Hixson (nurse-practitioner) and Patty Randolph-Clark (clinical therapist), I finally met Dr. Hixson last week. I felt very comfortable with him. He made me feel as if he had all the time in the world to talk with my husband and myself even though I knew he had a roomful of patients waiting for him. His office staff is great!! Usually, I feel that "staff" anywhere I go tend to look down on me because I'm so fat; Dr. Hixson's staff treated me like a real person. (That sounded kinda sad, didn't it?!)LOL
Dr. Hixson was a very nice person. He answered all my questions and reassured me that I was going to do fine with the surgery and that he was proud that I was taking the initiative to change my life. All in all, I am happy with Dr.Hixson. His wife,Karen Hixson, I absolutely love. She is so understanding. Only good things come to those who wait! LOL! I will update as soon as possible!
Dr. Hixson is absolutely fantastic! I cannot say enough about him or his office staff. From the first, I felt comfortable (I usually don't feel comfortable meeting new doctors). I felt as though he really understood my issues and problems with obesity. And, unlike some doctors I've been to, he BELIEVED ME when I told him I'd tried every diet, I'd exercised my guts out, and I'd still failed. In the past, one doctor I saw told me to stop eating so many twinkies (I HATE twinkies) and get some exercise (I was swimming approx 5 miles a day at the time!). Dr. Hixson is compassionate, understanding, and most of all, committed to my success, as am I. The office staff is professional, incredibly competent, and willing to do whatever it takes for patient care. The only thing I didn't totally like concerns the placement of the scale in the office. It's out in the main room (after you're called in from the waiting room) and displays weight in HUGE red numbers. Anyone walking by can see how much anyone else weighs. This made me slightly uncomfortable, but nothing too too bad. Aftercare is emphasized a great deal - the hospital offers support groups and Dr. Hixson is personally available for anything a patient might need. I was made informed of all the surgical risks, and they provided me with a book about risks, dietary guidelines, what the surgery would look like anatomically, and what to expect from the surgery. It's a great booklet that they put together themselves. Overall, I'd rate Dr. Hixson and his staff a 10 out of 10!
Dr. Hixson is a very down to earth doctor and very understanding to obesity. His office staff was the same. His wife who works directly with him was also great and just so understand to all the emotional aspects that come with being obese. Dr. Hixson believes in wls and emphasizes the importance of aftercare. He let me know exactly was the surgery was and the risk of having the surgery; also the risk if the aftercare eating is not ahered to. He gave myself and my husband plenty of time to ask questions and fully answered them. Dr. Hixson and his staff are a ten. I highly recommend them.
Dr. Hixson's office staff was wonderful when scheduling my many test and with taking on the insurance company. I live almost 1 1/2 hours from the office and they tried to schedule tests on the same day to save on my traveling. The staff are all very professional, helpful, friendly and considerate. They seem to always smile!!
