George Cowan, Jr. Bariatric Surgeon M.D.,F.A.C.S.

MY FIRST CONSULTATION IS 07/19, SO I HAVEN'T BEEN FORMALLY INTRODUCED TO HIM YET....ALTHOUGH I ATTENDED THE HIS SEMINAR. AFTER GOING TO HIS SEMINAR, I REALIZED THAT I HAVE ATTENDED HIS SEMINAR ONCE BEFORE ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO AND DECIDED TO NOT FOLLOW UP DUE TO FEAR ABOUT THE SURGERY...EVERY EMAIL THAT I HAVE SENT HIM, HE HAS ANSWERED THEM, SO I'M PLEASED WITH MY DECISION TO CHOOSE DR COWAN AND DR HILER.
11/20/01
I HAVE MET DR COWAN AND DR HILER AND BOTH WERE VERY NICE AND THE STAFF IS NICE ALSO.
I WOULD RECOMMEND ANYONE IN MEMPHIS, TN AND SURROUNDING CITIES TO CHOOSE THE OBESITY WELLNESS CENTER (DR COWAN AND DR HILER) BECAUSE THEY GOT MY APPROVAL WITH THE FIRST LETTER AND THE OFFICE IS BEAUTIFUL.
OFFICE IS LOCATED AT 920 MADISON, SUITE 926...901-448-6635
PS...I ALSO WANTED TO STATE THAT DR COWAN'S STAFF ARE WONDERFUL PEOPLE AND I JUST WANT TO REALLY COMPLIMENT NANCY (SCHEDULER NURSE) BECAUSE SHE IS JUST SO KIND AND WONDERFUL.

My first impression of Dr. Cowan was that he is very knowledgeable.
Many people tried to discourage me from going to him. I was told that he is arrogant, he's a butcher, etc. However, these things were told to me by people that had never gone to him before. He took really good care of me before, during, and after my surgery. I developed clots in my right leg two weeks after surgery and he worked quickly, and efficiently to get the problem solved. I'm glad that he's my surgeon.
I would describe his staff as half of them being very unprofessional, while the other half is wonderful. I suppose he could use a better staff.
Dr. Cowan does make sure that you understand the risks before surgery, and too, the possible chance of death.
He stresses the after care program. He is very involved with all of his patients' aftercare.
Dr. Cowan's surgical competence is much better than his bedside manner. In my opinion, I would much rather be cut on by a skilled surgeon with a "not so great" bedside manner, than an unskilled surgeon who has a terrific bedside manner, but doesn't have a clue as to what he is doing!!!
I, personally like Dr. Cowan and would recommend him to anyone who is wanting to have WLS.

1. Dr. Cowan was nice but I was very uncomfortable.
2.
I really like him more than I did at first, he was just great about everything.
Nice. He has a nurse Beth..she's funny but very serious about post-opers getting in that protien.
3. I did get to see him as much in the office I saw his assistant Dr. Hiler, but he's great too.
4. He emphasizes it a great deal. How important it is to get your protien and go to support group meetings.
5. Yes he does.
6. He gives you a packet to read and explains before hand, which I'm glad he didn't go into great detail because it would have scared me.
7. On the scale of 1 to 10...with 1 being horriable and 10 being the best.. a 8.5!
8. BOTH!!!

My first impression of Dr. Cowan was a good one. He seemed intimately sincere about his work and genuinely concerned about each patient. His office staff is very limited and they are extremely busy. You will have to call them on a constant basis until someone will assit you with the help that you need. However, they tell you up front to be patient. He's very frank and upfront about the risks involved. Overall, Dr. Cowan was very professional and caring.

Dr. Cowan seems like he truly cares about his patients. He took his time answering all of my and my husbands questions. There was no rush and he was very informative. He is very insistent on aftercare and followup care. Overall, I would say that he rates extremely high on surgical compentence and his bedside manner.

I have only talked with DR. Cowan one time.I have had to see a psychiatrist and a lung specialist. I have had an endoscopy and will soon have a sleep study done. I have been told that I will have to have a filter put in a week or two before surgery to prevent pulmonary embolus postop.DR.Cowan is well known in West TN. for his years of expertese in performing Bariatric surgery and the hospital staff is well trained in caring for patients having Bariatic surgery.I have talked with some of is prior patients who recomended him highly as one of the best.

he's very knowledgeable and very amiable. his staff is a bit dissappointing--people are polite and do what their jobs are but they are often a little slow. it depends on the day as well. dr. cowan's credentials speak for themselves. dr.cowan is very concerned about everything having to do with after care--sometimes i think it's too much--but i am glad he cares. in my opinion, surgical competence as well as bed side manner are equally important.

My first impression was that he is a champion for obese persons. I still believe he is a champion to the plight of obese people and he is very caring. His office staff could use some improvement, but I charge their sometimes curt behavior to their heads and not their hearts. I'm not sure if I could always be courteous if I were in their shoes. His office is busy and it must be taxing to have to answer relentless questions by patients in the office as well as those calling. I don't dislike anything about him. The wait to see him was long in my book, but from what I have heard about the wait for other surgeons, it's not as long as some. He does emphasize aftercare indicating that people he operates on are patients for life. There is a structured aftercare program as well as a support group. He really addressed the risks. You have to attend lecture prior to getting an appointment. He talks about every possible risk and explains the anatomy in great detail. So far I rate him A . I will update after my surgery, then I can comment of his bedside manner and surgical competency.
