J. Ryland Scott Bariatric Surgeon M.D.

I actually work with Dr. Scott, so I see how he treats his patients on a daily basis. He is a wonderful surgeon and man. His office staff has always been polite and welcominging. He is for sure a 10/10 doctor. Excellent surgical competence and bedside manner. He always makes sure you and your family understands everything, and he takes his time to do so.

What was my first impression of Dr. Scott? I went to his seminar Dec. 18th, 2003. Dr. Scott is very detailed, smart, confident, and pleasant.
How did my impression changed over time?
I have talked with other past patients of his on this web site. Had my first metting with him, and he is great. Answered all of my questions, even the stupid ones.
How would I describe his office staff?
Ginger is his #1 and she will do everything she can to help you out. She will do what she says she will do, like return your calls, which the other Dr.'s office did not do. She is wonderful!
What do I like least about him?
I have not found anything that I don't like about Dr. Scott or his staff. They have all been very nice and friendly.
What should future patients know?
Future patients should know that Dr. Scott expects you to do your best to make this surgery work. You will have to stick to the food plan, do your exercises, and attend post-op visits and at least 5 support groups over the next year, more if you want. He seems to care about your health before, during, and after the surgery.
How much does he emphasize aftercare?
Dr. Scott is very dedicated to having his patients do the very best that they can after the surgery. He is the type of Dr. who triple checks everything to ensure your safty and health and to minimize any complications from the surgery and after.
Does he have a structured aftercare program?
Dr. Scott has a complete team for all after-care needed. They only deal with Bariatric patients.
How did he address the risks of surgery?
His seminar was very detailed and was more informative than the one given by Emory Bariatrics in Nov. 03. He addressed every thing from before surgery to the % of possible death and complications from any surgery.
How would I rate him overall?
I would rate Dr. J. R. Scott (at this time) as a 9 out of ten.
Which is better, surgical competence, bedside manner, or both?
He has both great knowledge and a friendly -careing personality. I think his 'bedsside manner' will be just as nice.

I have not had the surgery yet, my date is scheduled for Feb.18,2004. I have had my consulatation with Dr. Scott and he was wonderful! His informational meetings taught me alot about what I was to expect, and he has a good program set up for pre and post op care. He's even arranged discounted rates at an area wellness center for all of his patients. His staff (The greatest nurse of all... GINGER) is really nice and overly helpful lol. They did everything they could to help and were kind throughout the whole ordeal. Very very thorough testing. Sleep apnea, cortisol, cbc's, etc... He really wants you to do well. He was very straight forward and I am looking forward to having my surgery with him. The only bad (and good) thing I've heard for aspriring Post ops is he is EXTREMELY picky about the patients he chooses. He wants to know that you are fully aware of what you're getting into. I know several people that he has turned down. So have your ducks in a line before you get a referal or you call!

Dr. Scott has actually moved from VA to Rome, GA. I was his first patient in his new practice as well as his first bariatric surgery patient at Floyd Medical Center in Rome (actually I was the first person to have Bariatric surgery in ROme. Prior to Dr. Scott's arrival, you had to go to Atlanta). Before meeting with Dr. Scott I was a little uncomfortable because of him not being from around here and not knowing much about him. His office worked with me prior to his coming so that everything would be ready when he got here. On my first appointment, August 4, Dr. Scott spent quite a while with my husband and me going over every aspect of the surgery. From that point on, we felt perfect peace about him and the surgery. He did not disappoint us. Not only is he a wonderful doctor, but compassionate as well. He genuinely cares about the welfare of his patients and wants them to be a success. He expects a lot out of you as a patient, (before and after surgery), but I wouldn't want it any other way. I had my surgery 2 weeks after the appointment (because all other testing had been done prior to his coming to GA). He was the same at the hospital as he was in the office. He understood my fears and assured me all would be fine. I would rate him 100% on surgical competence as well as bedside manners. You rarely find a doctor with both. The surgery went wonderful. I was able to go home a little earlier than expected and have had no complications whatsoever. You can tell from my post that I would not use anyone else and would highly recommend Dr. Scott. I can honestly say that I have had no negative experience whatsoever - with him or his office staff, or the hospital. These are all only my personal opinions of Dr. Scott and my experience with him as a doctor/patient, and is no way indicative of anyone else's experience.

I first met Dr. Scott on October 31, 2002
when I had my first appointment to see if I
qualified for By Pass. I liked him instantly
and find him to be very straight forward and
honest when I ask questions. I learned so
much in the classes that his staff does and
my meetings with the dietician. He and his
staff went over all the risks of surgey with
me, took time to answer all questions and I
feel I'm going into the surgery very well
informed. In the past six months I have had
a lot of tests that he requires before doing
the surgery. Since I am five hours from the
University he allowed me to do all the tests
locally and then the results were faxed to
him. When I saw him last week I got my date,
it's June 9th and even though I am scared I
am so ready to do this for myself. Right now
I would highly recommend him and I will post
another entry after my surgery and let you
know how it goes. I have complete confidence
in Dr. Scott and having him do my surgery...

July 4th
Dr. Scott and his staff were wonderful, to
me, and I am very pleased that I chose him
as my surgeon. He met with me as soon as I
got checked in, on the morning of my surgery,
and on his daily visits he was always kind,
compassionate and gentle. To answer the
questions my first impression of him was
good and that didn't change. There was not
anything about him that I didn't like and
future patients should know they are in
good hands if they chose him for their
surgery. Yes, he stressed the importance of
aftercare and the dietitian who works with
him is very helpful. As for addressing the
risks of surgery he explained it to me in
detail and made sure I knew I might die and
still wanted to go through with it. His
surgical competence and bedside manner are
both great and his overall rating was
very good.
On the down side he is leaving UV and he
and his family are moving back to his home
town in Georgia. I don't blame him at all
for making the move but will miss him a
lot. However I know I am going to be in
good hands with his associate. My two week
check back was my last with him and my four
week one will be with the new doctor. I wish
I could have had him at least through the
first six months but we don't always get
what we hope for. Good Luck Dr. Scott!!!!
