J. Ryland Scott Bariatric Surgeon M.D.

Well my first impression of Dr. Scott was that he is very concerned and compassionate with his patients. He spoke to me very openly and asked questions. What I had to say mattered to him.He told me all of the risks to the surgery. Mostly we are worried with my ankle collapsed my being able to keep the circulation going by being able to get up and walk.I feel as though hes going to make sure everything goes well and Im comfortable allowing him to do the surgery.

My first impressions of Dr. Scott were good but he is severely understaffed. He operates out of a teaching university -- University of Virginia, and I understand that is often the case for teaching hospitals. You would think the opposite would be true! At the time of my Orientation he had only "B" to process all the paperwork to insurance companies for over 300 patients. I waited 4 months just to get my request faxed to the MAMSI/MD-IPA. I do not know the content of Dr. Scott's letter but MAMSI came back with a request for clinical documentation from my PCP that I have had 6 consecutive months of a supervised weight loss program in the past 12 months. That information was provided by me at the time of the initial referral appointment but probably not by the PCP. So I wait again in frustration. MAMSI refused to accept my physician-recommended weight watchers program and HMR program as medically supervised. Even though I've appealed I am going to go see PCP's nutritionist for 6 months and try again. I am going to have this surgery, maybe not now but definitely later.
