First impression: Kind, not judgemental at all. Very thorough & knowledgeable. The dieticians associated with him are pretty good & he is very involved with the post surgery diet/nutritional program and the aftercare.
He has both excellent surgical competence & good bedside manner. He also has an excellent support group.
Office staff: Very pleasant. There was a tiny issue regarding my insurance approval. The office didn't recieve the original letter. This was easily resolved by faxing my copy of the the approval letter.
On a scale of 10 I would rate Dr Alexander as a 15!
The only other difficulty I had was with finding a Psychiatrist who would accept my insurance. That aspect was very frustrating. In the end I paid out of pocket to have the Mental Health Evaluation required by my insurance.
I adored him, I adore him even more. His staff is the best. Dr. Alexander is amazing. He has many years experience and has done many of these procedures. He is highly competent, very personalable and truly cares about his patients. There is nothing I dislike about him or his staff. They are all highly qualified, highly trained people with a deep interest in helping others in their goal to get the weight off and get healthy.
Future patients, those of you looking for the greatest surgeon around...call Dr. Alexander. They will make sure that your journey is the best experience you have ever had. They encourage after care and preop care. They have a great preop and postop support group and classes that he insists on you taking so that you are well informed before your journey begins. All of the risks are noted and explained before you ever have your surgery. Overall, I rate Dr. A a great big 10...the man has changed my life for the good. There are not enough good words to describe how I feel about this surgeon and his abilities. Both his surgicl competence and bedside manner are great. He has a very soft spoken way about him. He listens when you are concerned and wants your journey to be the best it can be. So do his staff members. From the first survey, the first insurance issues until now, I know that I am in capable hands. Hands that no matter what I need will be there for me. There is no one I would rather have done my surgery or handled any of my care.
My first impression was he was very kind, and sincere, and LISTENED!! My impression has not changed much! When he is rushed, he is a little short on time, and is short on answers...but, aren't we all?? Office staff is great! Before I recieved my info packet...it was very nerve wracking...because I didn't want to bug them...but, I wanted to know when it was coming. They told me to be patient. I wasn't. But, I did not call and bug them all the time either!! The least thing about Dr. Alexander that I did not like was I have not received a full explanation on my actual surgery, and the complications I had. I still have questions...I will be asking at my next check up. Future patients...go in with a list of questions. Do your homework. Write down answers, so you don't have to ask the same questions over and over!! AFtercare is emphasized!! He expects you to be responsible. Definetly explained the risks of surgery!! Very up front!! Rate: excellent!! I trust him fully! Definetly surgical cpmpetence...if you don't have that, it doesn't matter what their bedside manner is!! Think about it!!
I really felt comfortable with Dr. Alexander, at first he tried to talk me out of the surgery because I was borderline for the minimum requirements needed for surgery. He wanted to make sure I new the risks that were involved in the surgery and was willing to accept them. I came through with flying colors and was on my way to my new life. Three months out we moved, granted I didn't strap the stove to my back and carry it out but MAYBE I was doing to much so soon after my surgery. I spent most of the night in the emergency room in pain and then tried to contact Dr. Alexander the next day. This is where the problem started, I felt like he had done the surgery and he didn't wanted to be bothered with me anymore. After numerous times trying to get in contact with him I gave up and found Dr. Smith. Dr. Smith got me in right away and help me with my pain. I can not tell you how much Dr. Smith and his staff helped me in my true time of need. They are so friendly and I think honestly care about every person they comes through the door.
My first impression of Dr. Alexander was that he has done this many many times. His office had prepared a list of questions and answers about the procedure, so I went in to my initial consultation with a fair amount of knowledge already. -- Although I liked Dr. Alexander right away, his office staff was often unhelpful, in my experience. I particularly had problems with insurance - I had to personally contact the insurance company several times to make sure things were moving along. During one such phone call, I actually found out they were waiting on more information from me; had I not called, the expiration date on getting all my information together would have passed, and I would have been denied. Other people have probably had more pleasant experiences, though, since the office seems well run except for the above issues, and I got wonderful results by speaking to the office manager. -- I am very impressed with the program itself. The required support group and pre-op nutrition programs were very helpful and said in great detail exactly how we should be eating at each stage of recovery. There is also a post-op nutrition program, and scheduled visits back to the doctor at frequent intervals. -- He addressed the risks of surgery very bluntly, both in my initial consultation and in my pre-op visit, as well as in the papers he had prepared to explain the details of the surgery. I appreciated his honesty, although it did make me a little nervous! But although I am nervous, I am also convinced that I am in the best possible hands, and I will be well cared for. -- The doctor is very experienced and is the director of the WLS division. He was previously the director of the transplantation division, so I have a great deal of confidence in him.
I am 100% satisfied with Dr. Alexander, his staff, and his program. I was given thorough information from the beginning of the referral process and throughout the "journey" and have always felt well-informed. Nutrition classes are offered pre- and post-op as well as monthly support group meetings at the hospital. Dr. Alexander has an excellent reputation and a LOT of experience with GBS. His bedside manner leaves something to be desired--he's not a "warm fuzzy" person. However, I was willing to overlook that since he is such a well-respected surgeon. His staff is very friendly and efficient. He performs GBS at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. I cannot say enough good things about the staff at Christ--they were wonderful to me. I would highly recommend Dr. Alexander and Christ Hospital to anyone in this area interested in GBS.
I have been very pleased with Dr. Alexander. He has done around 600 bariatric surgeries, and I feel he is the best in this area. He is not "Mr. Personality" and neither is his staff but I have managed to bring out a few smiles from him. He's kinda hard to get to know and I guess that shouldn't matter as long as he's a good surgeon. I felt God led me to him and I have done wonderful under his care.
Dr. Alexander was professional and was not rushed - he offered to answer any questions.
He was very clear about the risks of surgery and we discussed my research (internet and personal contacts)into the surgery, surgeon, hospitals, before and after care programs,
nutrition advice/support. I would rate him good. Surgical competence is most important to me.
The staff was very helpful as I prepared for my office visit and during my visit.
3/17 - I have a surgery date of 3/29. Dr Alexander's office staff (especially Nancy and Kim)have been most helpful.
I am five days away from surgery, and I must say that after my final pre-op visit with Dr. Alexander, I really like him. He could see my nervousness (I've never had invasive surgery before), and so he actually was a little bit less formal this time. He assured me that everything would be okay, and that with my size (about 100 lbs. overweight) there should be no problems.
