Dr. Higa was very friendly and personable. He is a surgeon and likes control. I don't think he likes me very much because I challenged him with his routines. Office staff was excellent many of them post op. Dr. Higa's post op instructions were not very specific but contacting others from other programs helped me and talking with other post op lap RNY's was very helpful. Aftercare is emphasized but coming from a long distance I've had to push a little to get the info I need from what they offer. I had to prove I had an idea of what I was getting into and that I had counseling support and group support set up locally before I was approved for surgery. When Dr. Higa does say something, even very low key, take note, he means it. I was not allowed to gain preop or my surgery would have been cancelled.
I developed several post op complications which could have been prevented if Dr. Higa had checked my clotting time prior to administering heparin (drug that can cause you to bleed) or had put in a wound drain into one of my incisions. When I informed the office my wound had opened I was cautioned not to see someone locally. I wasn't believed, Dr. Higa accused me of making up the wound. I couldn't get dressings or homecare ordered. I did get antibiotic support. Being a RN I was able to heal myself. I attribute this lack of care to Dr. Higa's self confidence because I was the first patient of his who's wound had opened up under his current surgical procedure.

I finally met with Dr. Higa but only briefly. He was very nice... has a great reputation. Spent most of my time with the nurse practioner, can't remember her name but wasn't very impressed with her. Found her to be phony, she tried to answer my questions but I wondered about her actual knowledge of the procedure. I hope that on my pre-op visit to spend more time with Dr. Higa. Everyone else was very nice, prompt, no problems. Can't schedule surgery date until complete psych eval and submit to insurance. Psych eval scheduled 2/11/02

My first impression of Dr. Higa was good. My sisters went with me because it was a four hour drive and he was joking around with them while still trying to make me feel comfortable.
Dr. Higa did such an awesome job with my surgery. I felt he was the doctor best qualified to operate on me (trust me, I went to three other doctors before him!)

I was impressed with Dr. Higa from my first visit, and my feelings about him haven't changed. His staff was very helpful, particularly with the insurance issues related to the surgery. My only negative comment about Dr. Higa is that he seems to "overbook" himself on occasion. This doesn't mean he spends less time with a patient, but you tend to have to wait sometimes an unusually long time. I'd tell future patients that he is very caring and concerned that you understand both the process of the surgery and the aftercare involved and necessary. He has a great support group established, very helpful. Overall, I think he was the best choice for me, and for anyone. By the way, I discussed the procedures with 2 other surgeons before settling on Dr. Higa. He was the last I saw, and I'm grateful he was recommended to me.

Dr. Higa is congenial, efficient, skilled. I checked him out with several medical people who had had the proceedure done.

It's been 2 weeks since the surgery and I've no cause to change my first impressions.

He is organized, knowlegable. When I called on the phone, I felt that his staff weren't as organized.
His lack of accessibility, though I don't know what he could have done for me had he been any more accessible.

Doctors from around the world come to watch him operate. He demands that the patient go through numerous hoops to qualify--more than other surgeons in the area.

He's very precise in his directions and expects his patients to follow them to the letter. I have an appointment schedule and he strongly suggests his patients join a support group.

His approach is matter-of-fact, doesn't shade the truth.

He deserves the highest grades in surgical competence. If I had to say anything amis it would be that he seemed in a rush when he visited me post-op.

Dr. Higa look very young, but he is about 40. He was very nice and I felt at ease with him. He gave me the inpression that he really did know what he was doing. The office staff was great.

My Dr held a seminar that I was required to attend before the initial consultation. The seminar was informative.

I have only had the initial consultation with Dr Higa but I left his office without the feeling I get so often with other doctors that because of my weight it is okay to insult or be condescending to me.

Dr Higa was interested in my history and family, concerned about my health and vrey reassuring about the benefit to me in having the surgery.

Additionally he reassured me concerning the fact that 2 years ago I attempted to have the surgery but the procedure was aborted when the anaesthesiologist was unable to intubate me. His confidence that this would not be a problem went a long way to calm my fears.

I am about 3 weeks away from having the surgery and seem to be fluctuating between excited and scared.
