Dr Ken Burchard was the surgeon I was given for my WLS. I found that Dr Burchard was very knowledgable, and very quick to answer questions. The program at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center is such that a person can truely feel that they are making an informed decision about this procedure. I found that while Dr Burchard was a man of few words, he was a man with kind eyes and a warm smile. In terms of before and aftercare, Dr Burchard gives the impression that his staff is more then competent and allows them to handle these tasks, which they do with professionalism and warmth. The only negative thing I could possibly say is that during the time I was preparing for my surgury, the office staff was going through some internal changes, which resulted in some of my paperwork being misplaced, which resulted in a bit of frustration at having to call every couple of days to see if things arrived, and having to have things refaxed to the office more then once, but in the grand sceme of things, this was more of an inconvienence and probably as frustrating to them as it was to me. Dr Burchard hid nothing from me, meaning that I was well aware of all of the risks and possible side affects. I had more then ample time to think about what I was doing and more then once I called his office staff with a question out of the blue. When my insurance denied my claim for the surgury(which to be honest was a nightmare), DHMC bent over backwards to help me secure money to pay for the procedure. In case you haven't guessed, it's my opinion that a good surgeon isn't enough. What you need to have is a competent surgeon who has a competent staff and an outstanding facility to back him up. In Dr Burchard, you have all three.

I met with Doctor Burchard on Nov. 19, 2001. He was very professional and very "to the point." All my questions were answered in an a way that not only I understood but he even changed my way of thinking on a few things. (in a good way) His resident was there and she was very helpful and as soon as I can remember her name I will post it too. <smiling> Ok, I remember, it was Dr. Lampart, or something like that. She was very helpful and was very interested in ME. I am very happy to have such caring and professional people working for/on me.

I met Dr. Burchard back in April of 2001, we had a very educational meeting. He was friendly and considerate in his questioning as well as being upfront in regards to things I could expect to face prior, during and after the surgery.
The staff at the medical center seemed very sincere and were quite efficiant in scheduling procedures that were needed prior to the surgery.
I found the support groups informative but very inconveinent as far as the times that they were scheduled; but they are required and so time was made in my schedue to attend these meetings.
All together my experiences were very positive <hopefully the surgery will be as well>.

Very impressed He explained every thing to pros and cons very well . Told me all the risks. Because I was in a medical emergency, he took me in ahead of a lot of other patients. Usually the waiting time is about 9 months. I first saw him in July of 2000 and was scheduled for Sept/ 6 I have severe lymphedema in the legs so bad it is like elephantitis and I was almost completely imobile. I couldnt breathe well at all because of asthema and my weight. I am also an insulin dependent diabetic. Just the 106 lbs lbs I have lost has made such a difference. I no longer need an inhaler, my insulin has been cut in half and if It wasnt for my legs I could actually walk better. I know I have a long way to go but I am still trying. I go to a wellness Center 3 times a week to work out and do whatever I can. So heres hoping!!All in all my experience was very positive. I was out of the hospital in 7 days. I have thanked GOD a million times for being there with me.

I had my consult with Dr Burchard on 5/14. He basically went over the procedure, and what the possible complications could be. I had to sign a release acknowledging these risks. He is very nice, and to the point. I felt very at ease with him. I like the fact that he is also a trauma surgeon - gives me even more confidence ! He gave me plenty of time to ask any questions that I had - wasn't rushed or pushy. Made me feel that all of my questions were important (even if only to me !).

Dr. was streight forward.I felt I did a lot of reasearch prior to my visit. I was well informed and he said a lot that I already knew. When a question did come to mind I just called and the office staff was helpfull. The entire program is in the process of being worked on, but things they have you do are for your own good. they also give you an honest, matter of fact approch to things. I like that. I had time to look at every aspect of this surgery and how it will effect my life. Also nice to know that they will be there for you when you need the support. There are so many people now looking into wls that you do kind of feel like cattle. But when you speak with the staff they are very nice, helpfull and know their stuff......

Dr. Burchard is a very busy man. He is to the point and follows his agenda to a T. You need to comply with all of his list of pre-surgical requisites without exeption. He has been at this for a long time and knows his stuff. It gave me a secure feeling of confidence that I had a surgeon with such experience taking care of me. His office staff are so excellent. I look forward to my visits there (and I have Never said that about any doctor's office)but, begining with reception clear through to all of his support staff they are amazing. Aftercare is stressed right from the begining. I had to attend a minimum of four months of support group meetings before I could have the surgery and they strongly encourage you to continue to attend the support group meetings post-op. I love going to the support group meetings once a month to touch base with others that have been through this procedure. It is a great time to bring up questions or concerns you may have as you will get the support and advice from the whole group. The support group meetings are extremely important. Dr. Burchard explained the whole procedure including any risks involved. Overall on a scale from one to ten he would get a nine from me. I think surgical compentence is the most important part, but bedside manner is really important too. Dr. Burchard stopped in my room for about a minute and a half to assure me that everything went fine and then he was gone. I haven't seen him since. I'll will be seeing him in April for my first post-op check.

I have my 1st appointment with him on 11/29/99.

Update 12/5/2000 - Dr. Burchard is one of the most caring person I have ever met! His whole staff including the Resident DR's that assist him are great. I highly recommend!
