I was so nervous meeting Dr. Welker but he put my nerves at ease right away. He was so helpful in explaining the procedures he has to offer. His staff was very nice and helpful. He let me know this is a long term commitment that after the surgery you have to change your eating habbits and excersize. I received his email address and he writes me back when I have a question and he is representing me for my insurance company. I couldnt have asked for a more caring and in depth Doctor than Dr. Welker. He follows through with his patience. I can't wait till the surgery.

I really liked my first impression of Dr. Welker. I had an appointment with Dr. Flanagan, but he was out of the country when the terrorist attack happened and couldn't get home when planned. Dr. Welker is Dr. Flanagan's new associate and has moved to Eugene from Portland, so they scheduled me with him.....I am very glad. He was very nice and answered all of my questions and I felt very comfortable with him. My surgery will be in October, but I don't know the exact date yet. I thought the office staff would schedule me today, but hopefully it will scheduled on Monday. He will be doing a laproscopic procedure and there is a very structured aftercare program.
My surgery was 10-9-01....Dr Welker has a great bedside manner besides being very competent. Makes having all the pain a little bit easier.

Dr Welker is the most savvy surgeon I have ever had the joy of meeting. His dedication towards the obese is unrelenting. His bedside manner is excellent and he wants you to particpate in your medical care with him. If you dont understand something he makes sure you do. He has the famous Welker hug he gives to all his patients which is warm and caring.
I contacted him by email one night about the surgery and within the hour on a sunday night he had emailed me back asking for my phone number. He called us the next night and he and my husband spoke for about 45 minutes asking and answering all questions.
There isnt anything not to like about Welker. He is often referred to as the "Wizard" as he works his magic in a way no other surgeon can do.
Aftercare is very important to Dr Welker and he emphazizes it greatly and he is accessable to all of his patients via email if something comes up.
He comes highly recommended by both my husband and myself. We trust him with our lives!

Wow is all I can say... Everything I read about this man was so very true. I liked him and felt at ease the minute I met him. And he became my surgeon thru the hand of God I am convinced as I had intended to see Dr. Flannagan. The appointment was not scheduled until Oct. However the office called me and told me that a partner had joined Dr. F and would I be willing to see him. I said yes and then went to work researching him on the Internet. It was all good and I feel very confident that I will be in great hands... I will keep you all up to date.... Mooo

Dr. Welker is simply the most attentive, talented physician I have ever met. If you don't care about bedside manner then ignore this part, but I think his incredible dedication to each patient sets Dr. Welker apart as one of the top bariatric surgeons in the world. He is as obsessive with regard to obesity knowledge and insurance research as we all are, and he has an informed opinion on every aspect surrounding surgery and recovery. My opinion of him, as a friend and advocate, has only grown throughout my long approval and surgery process.
Dr. Welker is one of 900 physicians working out of UMG, University Medical Group, which offers treatment through OHSU's Physician's Pavillion. He does most of his own paperwork (minimal office staff) and only has one day a week for scheduled office visits--which means that he is extremely busy and his schedule is quite impacted. This can be a hindrance for some. If you need someone to fight your insurance company though, Welker's your man. It's too bad he doesn't have more staff so he can get the paperwork done more quickly.
Most aftercare questions are best addressed within his support group setting (if you want answers outside a personal consult appointment) and Dr. Welker makes an effort to address any and all concerns when he appears monthly at OHSU. (Minutes from the meetings are posted by various members on the WelkerOSSG egroups list.) Dr. Welker gets out his markers and lectures like the group is one of his med school classes! He's an excellent teacher, very easy to understand. His surgeries and aftercare requirements are largely individualized.
He teaches general surgery and laproscopic surgery at OHSU med school. He is a perfectionist and I believe his surgery skills (lap or open) are superior to other current WLS surgeons. He was the only choice for me and, IMHO, he's the best DS surgeon in the world.
