My first impresson was this guy is young and that he must be a student, but he was very nice and informative. I asked about a psych. eval that I have heard of and he said he was it. I passed. He told me that I would only see him this time and then on the table and all follow up would be done by students, at UCLA, but Janice will tell you all about the support group and answer anything else and she did.

Dr.Sawicki is an affable, kind, and straightforward personality. I was very nervous prior to my consultation. After my initial exam we proceeded to talk about the surgery. Dr. Sawicki has a sense of humor that puts you at ease very quickly. He answered all of my questions.(2 pages worth) He was very patient and never seemed to be watching the clock. His attention was totally devoted to the moment. He did not mention aftercare, but Joyce spoke to me in length about the support groups and on-line support. Between Dr.Sawicki, Joyce and the nutritionists I received a great introduction into the Bariatric Program at UCLA.
Dr.Sawicki told me that he would not see me before surgery, only the day after.

I can always call him if needed, or any of the bariatric team.

I am under the care of Dr. Mark Sawicki at UCLA medical Center. he is a very nice doctor and answered all of my questions. He seemed to be genuine and good and I really liked my first impression of him. I have only met with him once so far so thats all I can say but I am hoping for a good experience. UPDATE! Dr Sawicki Was the BEST! My scar is about 4 1/2 inches long and really neat and minimal. He's a terrific surgeon and has a wonderfully comforting but frank manner... all his women patients in my support group have stalker like crushes on him! If you have the option to choose, hes a good bet! I just got lucky!

Dr. Sawicki was a godsend for me. He was the only surgeon I spoke with when I started looking for bypass surgery. I'm fortunate enough to work at UCLA so I had access to what is one of the top medical centers inthe world.

Dr. Sawicki was very thorough in explaning all about the RNY procedure; the good parts AND the 'bad parts.' It only took me about a day to decide to have the surgery after he told me I was an ideal candidate.

His surgical competence is excellent -- my scar is minimal, due to a drainage tube I had no oozing and my recovery was very successful.

If there was anything negative about my experience, Dr. Sawicki is SO busy with surgeries and a new child I never really saw him after my hospital discharge, but since I had no problems it was not a concern for me.

He goes highly recommended, not only from a very grateful me but dozens of other patients I am in contact with in out UCLA Support Group.

My first impression of Dr.Sawicki was "Oh my God is this guy old enough to be a doctor".He is a young, sharp looking guy that is a fantastic surgeon. After talking to him he basically took away most my and my wifes fears.
Very good, careing and professional office staff.
I can't think of one thing that I didn't like about the man.
He is very funny and has a great sence of humor,be prepared for a good laugh.
He enphasized the extreme importance of aftercare and the need for a good support system.
I only had one appointment with him after surgery to have my staples removed. But he set me up with 6 visits with one of UCLA's nutrition Doctors to help map my progress and help with my needs and questions.
He explained to me very carefully the risks involved in having the procedure.I explained to him that I had very little quality of life and If something did happen at least I would have went trying.
I rate him an absolute 10.While he was in doing my RNY he discovered that I had Gallbladder cancer. He removed it and as of right now I am cancer free. After I found out how deadly GB cancer is I thank God everyday for Dr.Sawicki and his skill as a surgeon.
I think overall he is just a regular guy. He doesn't act like he should be treated like a status symbol just because he is a doctor. He is a great surgeon and he or his assistant came to check on me every single day that I was in the hospital.Great bedside manner.
The only real negative thing that I could say would have been about some of the nurses at UCLA. Some were very, very good and were there for us patients there were 1 or 2 there that were only there for a paycheck and it was very evident.

Dr. Sawicki at UCLA Medical Center is my surgeon, I met him on 06-22-00. He was very nice and took time to answer all my questions. My 3 year old son was with me and he was very nice to him too. Everyone at the office was wonderful, I don't have a date yet, but should hear soon.

I just got my date today-it will be 09-26-00 YIPEEEE!!!

I had my pre-op appointment with Dr. Sawicki at UCLA. I felt very confident with him. He answered all my questions. I was happy to see that he only did the open RNY as that was the decision I had already made after doing research. I think the risk of leaking from the staples to connect the intestine is a greater risk than I'm willing to take. I prefer nice neat hand stitching.
