Robert Liem Bariatric Surgeon M.D.,F.A.C.S.

my first impression of doc liem was a warm careing individual. his office staff is very informative and right on the ball. they treat you like a friend and make you feel right at home. so far we are still in the insurance stage and aftercare has not been broached. my family doc had no complaints in regards to the surgeons qualifications and abilities. time will tell as far as the next step in his program...UPDATE...surgery schedualed for tomarrow 6-5-00 ...met with Dr. Liem 4 days ago for final instructions and I liked him more than the first visit...he was warm and gentle and sat and answered all of my questions and didnt think any of them silly...I feel we will work well together to make my post op period the easiest we can...his nurse maria is warm and caring and accessable and I'm very happy with my choice...more later...Well its been a week since my surgery and I have to say I made a good choice in surgeons. I spoke to the OR nurses just before surgery and they raved about him, after surgery many of the nurses and care givers in the hospital had nothing but good things to say, and last but not least my husband spoke with an nurse in Bethesda Hospital and she was 101% for him. Dr. Robert Liem is a good and warm Doctor and I highly recomend him. More later.
Its been 10 years since my surgery. gained 30 plus lbs and hated it. now im only 3 lbs over my lowest weight and i am pleased. loosing weight isnt any easier after time has passed since surgery but at least i can lose it now. i wish i could find my medical records and dr liem but i cant he has moved and so have i. I miss the support group at jfk hospital and i miss florida. good luck to you all.

He's not a social butterfly however he was/is very informative and kind. As I went to my post op appts, he became more open and very encouraging. (He has a great smile!)
His office staff is wonderful, especially Maria and Stephanie? (I think that's her name). There's nothing that I did not like about Dr. Liem or his staff. God has used this wonderful doctor and staff to save my life and I'm forever grateful to them. I would recommend them to all my friends and patients that need to have GBS.
Love ya doc!

I knew Dr. Liem by reputation; he's been practicing obesity surgery since the early eighties and is a board-certified surgeon.
He's a pleasnt doctor, and really knows his stuff. He's got a pretty decent bedside manner, and seems to care greatly about his patients and staff. He explained my surgery post-op in detail, particularly in light of the fact that I had a previous VBG to contend with.
About the only detractors I could possibly think of--and this is picking nits--is that he's Vietnamese and has a thick accent, which sometimes makes him difficult to understand. Also, he has chosen not to carry malpractice insurance, an option for physicians under Florida law.
However, he and his staff were always very caerful to outline the major steps of the surgery, and emphasize the risks.
His post-operative support is fairly decent, with the support group meeting once a month at JFK hospital. His staff have never failed to answer any of my questions with alacrity and professionalism, and I've had to page him twice after hours during my recovery, and each time, he's gotten straight back to me.
On a scale from 1 to 10, I'd rate Dr. Liem's practice a 8.

Excited about the possibility of helping me. Over time, I came to have high respect and love for Dr. Liem, although we did not meet pre-surgically for more than three sessions. Post-surgically, however, I saw him often and believe he prayed for me. No one ever said he did, but I believe he did because when I awakened from my anesthetic stupor, Dr. Liem was standing at the foot of my bed, head hung low with a concerned look on his face. I wondered what the concern was about, but didn't find out until ten months later, that my lungs had shut down while I was under and my family had been called because they were not expecting me to make it. I never told Dr. Liem that I was a smoker, but he prayed for me, I am sure of it and his skilled hands as a surgeon changed my life! I will never forget him.
Maria, Dr. Liem's assistant, was the best. She fought for my insurance to pay and it took her almost a year, but she got it done. I will never forget her, either. The other staff, I don't remember their names, but they were always friendly and encouraging.
I suppose what I liked least about Dr. Liem is that I wanted more of his time pre-surgically and wanted to be more prepared for what to expect.
Future patients should know that he is thorough and caring! He emphasized aftercare in the form of support group participation which I think is phenomenal. This could be improved by providing additional meeting times, locations and dates.
Dr. Liem provided group educational classes to address the pros and cons of the procedure as well as the types of procedures, their effectiveness, risks, and victories.
Overall, Dr. Liem is one of the very best! Surgical competence is his strongest asset, in my opinion.

I think that Dr. Liem and his staff are wonderful. The staff has treated me with more kindness than anyone I've ever dealt with regarding my obesity. They make me feel like I'm worth something, unlike other doctors who tend to be patronizing and put all the blame on my obesity on eating, which is not the case.

Dr. Liem, my surgeon has a great reputation. I know several people who have had the surgery by him and all speak very highly of him. He has been featured in the news on several occations. He has a wonderful sense of humor and I feel completely safe with him. His office staff is good. Yes, they are rushed and sometimes a bit short but they are working very hard so that as many of us can get the surgery as possible. His office staff handled everything for me.
Dr. Liem does have a structured aftercare program and he requires that you pay $700.00 up front for it as insurance does not reimburse for it. That is a whole lot better than another surgeon in town that requires that you pay $6,000.00 up front for his surgical fee and then get reimbursed what the insurance pays him.
So far, I have nothing but praise for Dr. Liem and his staff.
