I loved him!! Especially his assistant Maria, she is great and very thorough in decribing every part of the surgery to you..

Dr. Liem is great and his staff, Maria and Elizabeth are absolutely on top of everything. I'm sure I made a pest out of myself but they were always patient, understanding and extremely helpful. The staff did everything for me; provided me with referrals for the psych consult, etc., scheduled my Upper GI, so forth and so on. I know 100% positive reviews must seem unlikely, but I'm not kidding, they are super!

After meeting Dr. Liem and Maria I feel really comfortable with my decision to have WLS surgery. Maria explained every detail to me and answered all my questions. Dr. Liem also answered all my questions. Again I feel really comfortable with my choice of surgeons.

My first impression was of the office when I walked in. It is very old and rather grungy, but the office staff were very nice and made me feel welcome. I spoke with Maria for nearly two hours asking question. Dr. Liem walked in and out of the office several times and smiled, but didn't say much. Finally Dr. Liem came and spoke with me. He answered some final questions, asked for clarification on my medical conditions and then conducted a mini-physical. He was very business-like and I thought he was very shy, but likeable. He didn't tell me much about his aftercare program and no one said much about his support group. He was very confident that surgery would alleviate my diabetes and told me that there was a 99% chance that it would go into full remission. My only concern is that Maria is head nurse AND files the insurance paperwork. She seems very busy and might benefit from someone else taking over the insurance aspect.

I first called Dr. Liem's office on Thursday,
January 11, 2001 to inquire about an appointment
to discuss gastric bypass surgery. They gave us
an appointment the following week on Tuesday,
January 16. I was very suprised and pleased to
be able to get in to see him so quickly.
His office is rather small and older and the most
surprising thing is that the seats are mostly small
with arms. I fit OK, but my husband weights 469 and
he barely squeezed in the seat and was uncomfortable.
I thought that was strange.
All in all though, our visit was very good and very
informative. We had to wait a while and fill out some
paperwork. I had prepared a write up of a lot of detailed
information for both of us which they appreciated. We first
met with Maria who was very pleasant, and informative. She
described the process, answered a lot of questions and weighed
us. We then met with Dr. Liem. He also is very nice and answered
more questions. We saw lots of pictures of patients that they have
done surgery for - very impressive.
He explained not only the benefits of the surgery but also the
risks. He also has an aftercare program and a monthly support
group, so it just won't end after the surgery. I like that!
Since our first appointment I have tried not to bother them too
much, but have called weekly to check on the status of our insurance.
They file the insurance and I don't need to do anything with that.
So far we are very happy with Dr. Liem and his staff and feel that he
has both surgical competence as well as a good bedside manner.

I met Dr. Liem and his staff on January 31,2001. The office isn't a beautiful one but the people in it were sincerely caring. After a series of questions about my previous weight loss ventures etc. from Maria (who is very nice by the way) I got to meet Dr. Liem. He didn't rush me. He explained how the surgery is done and answered my questions. I was told that Maria would send a letter to my health insurance company (United Health)the following day and should have a response from them in about 2 weeks. They will contact me then. I guess they will tell me what happens next after that. The only disppointing factor I experienced is that I would like to have had more information. Like what happens after the insurance okays it - do I schedule sugery right then? What kind of pr-op is necessary? Maybe they don't want to waste time with all of that until they know I have been given the okay. But I still would like to know.
