I just went to the siminar where I met Susan the coordinator and have decieded to try and have Dr Read do my surgery. I haven't met him yet but I like the program so far.
I met Dr Read and I feel he is very knowlegable and he took the time to answer all of my questions. He is nice and looks you in the eye when explaining things. I have a lot of confidence in him.
Aftercare is very important to him and expects you to fallow up with him forever.
His staff is very helpful, and knowlegable, Susan and Kim are great.

He was wonderful. Competent, caring, concerned. He was enthusiastic about my progress and supported my ideas even when they were outside the norms of his program. My surgery recovery was ideal, with minimal complications and the minor ones I had were dealt with quickly and resolved in a positive way.

first impression hippy ha ha professional, measured with wry sense of humor, office staff first rate and very communicative- more to come. new paragraph new life. finished open rny oct 26, 05 my respect and admiration for dr read is imense. he spent an extra hours handling this big boy. i was out in 5 days. the nurses and staff at good sam are in awe of him. no pretenses, just measured competency and a great bed side manner. he actually, (read this carefully) comes in on his days off, usually weekends to check solely on his patients. what happened to golf? his program with asst bobbi is exemplarly , i got corner bigger room, by myself, larger bed, larger wheelchair, even a special plastic air mattress that inflated itself as i moved to alievate my sore tailbone. without stiches this would have been a good hotel. 10 days into aftercare the staff have also been there. my future looks a hell of a lot better than before i met dr read and his program. bless them all

My first impression of Dr. Read was how warm & compassionate he was. Since this is an overweight issue, and we all know how folks feel about that, I was afraid he would be condescending. Well, he wasn't at all! He looked me straight in the eye, and I could feel his compassion and wanting to help. Wow, I was blown away. And my impression never changed. I am almost 3 months out, and he still greets me with a handshake and a direct look with that warmth there.
His staff is also great. They visited with me every day I was in the hospital and followed up with numerous phone calls in the weeks that followed. They really go out of their way to get all the paperwork done as fast as possible and have everything ready. I've seen them burn the midnight oil, and I've also seen them *really* work with folks & their insurance to get this surgery. And it's all with compassion, and caring. You can just tell they care. In fact, I had an appointment, and was feeling kind of low. Well, one of the staff called me a few days later and asked how I was doing. She called because (and I quote), "You just seemed so sad" and she wanted to help me to feel better. Wow, I was so, so touched.
What did I like least about my surgeon? Hmm, I don't really know how to answer that. I can't think of anything whatsoever. He is such a nice man that cares about his patients, and remembers their names. I have nothing but great respect for Dr. Read.
What should future patients know about him... Hmm, the only thing I can think of is just be honest. He responds very well to that.
Dr. Read has started up the Samaratin Bariatric Program. This includes numerous informational sessions, lots of reading, and a Support Group. They strongly emphasize going to support group. We are also told to call if there are *any* issues, and I've seen/heard of him dealing with issues at all hours of the day/night. His staff keeps in close contact, and encourages us to call if there is anything going on. They are *very* involved in after care, and making sure this surgery is as successful as it can be.
Yes, Dr. Read, and his staff, have went over the risks of surgery numerous times. It was scary, but we all needed to know and understand it.
I would rate Dr. Read and the whole Bariatric Program the highest rating there is. I have had no complications, and everyone has been on top of checking up on me.
Dr. Read has a phenomenal Bedside manner, and he is the chief (or head, or whatever) of thoracic surgery, so his skills are way up there as well.
Working with Dr. Read and Samaratin Bariatric has been such a positive experience. I feel blessed to have gone through this the way that I have.

Dr. Read was a very kind, informative surgeon who made sure I could explain the surgery back to him including risks. The bariatric program at Good Samaritan in Corvallis is very comprehensive with a good staff. Everyone has been wonderful. They take a very conservative approach compared to what I've been hearing, but I believe that it is the way to achieve the best results.

II first saw Dr. Read at the general meeting he holds every other month for prospective surgical candidates. He struck me as very bright and knowledgeable. He is also very practical and approachable. I have grown to like him even more each time I see him.
Dr. Read's staff at the Samaritan Bariatric Center is excellent. Susan Majure, Bobbie and Sharon know every client by name and on sight. They called to be sure all my questions were covered before the surgery. They visited with me as I was on my gurney waiting to go the surgical suite. They visited me every day in the hospital. When I had some minor unpleasant after effects, they were right there making sure I could get in to see Dr. Read and had everything I needed to feel well.
Dr. Read's Bariatric Staff - mostly Susan Majure - preside over a support group that meets monthly and sponsors a newsletter. His staff includes access to a dietician for pre-surgical education and follow up eating plans. He provides a complete education about what to eat and what to except and I even got a list with dates for all of my follow up labs fro the next two years.
Dr. Read addressed the risks of surgery three times in full. The last time, he sat down with my husband and me and drew a picture of the results of the procedure and listed the side effects and possible adverse consequences right on the picture. This became part of my personal notebook with all my aftercare instructions.
I rate Bob Read as excellent both in terms of surgical skill, bedside manner and overall approach to this life changing procedure.
My only negative expereince was that the hospital answering service that Dr. Read uses was not working the one time I need to reach him that way. he wasmost apologetic and was at great pains to make sure I could reach him easily after that.
