Sidney Appel Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.

I had a group meeting on 12/7/2000 with Dr Appel. Before I met him I heard he is a very skilled and competent doctor but his bedside manor left little to be desired. When I did meet him he explained the different surgerys and why he preforms the one he does. Then came question time. He seemed a little impatient with some of the groups questions but answered everyone directly and honestly. I like Kathy his assitant alot she is very nice, Overall I picked Dr Appel because I have talked with some of his patient and other Doctors and I am most confident in his skills.

Dr. Appel is a very good surgeon. I chose him because he was highly recommended by my pcp and was close to my home. I went to several support group meetings before I had surgery and talked to many of his patients. The only problem I had was with his ins. coordinator at his office Laura. She had me so stressed out and mad I almost went to another dr. At the support group meeting I found out "everyone else had trouble with her too." So I stuck it out and 6 months after deciding to have surgery I did. I didn't like having the g tube in for 6 weeks and yes it did hurt! Now thats over with I have never thrown up or had any any other problems. I have lost over 60 lbs in 3 months. Today is July 5th and I have lost 100 lbs!!! Dr. Appel's ins. coordinator no longer works there! YEA!!

Although I have not had my surgery yet, I like Dr. Appel very much. He answers all of my questions. The only thing I can tell you is that his office staff is VERY, VERY fustrating to work with. It seems as though no one knows what is going on and that is kind of scarey. I was in there when a new patient needed some information and they had a problem giving that to her. She left in tears and I heard her say this is a scarey place to be...................but after all that I do like Dr. Appel and I think he will be fine after all HE is doing my surgery and not his office staff.

If you are looking for a warm and fuzzy surgeon, Dr. Appel is not your guy. If you are looking for an EXTREMELY talented surgeon, he's the one. I attended his introductory seminar. It started at 5 and didn't end until after 9. He stayed until every last question was asked and answered. Extremely thorough. Always tells it like it is. There are A LOT of hoops to jump through before getting scheduled for surgey (aside from insurance.) It was annoying as I was going from one test to another, to nutritionist, etc. But after reading so many posts about surgeons who will perform the surgery with very little background health information as long as insurance or the patient can pay, I realized what a service Dr. Appel provides. He also provides monthly support meetings w/ a great phychologist. His bedside isn't cuddly, but I always knew I was getting the best care. He gets 10 out of 10 in my book. Only problem was his program manager Laura, who has since left. Yeah! She was awful.
