I had my surgical consult today with Dr. Raper at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. I could not be more pleased. Everyone was kind and considerate. Our appointment lasted about 2 1/2 hours and we met with the nutritionist, Dr. Raper's assistant, and Dr. Raper. He was wonderful. He explained everything in detail. I had three pages of questions for him and he answered them all. I didn't feel rushed at all. I now have my \"marching orders\" for my pre-op testings. Overall I am very pleased so far with my experience at HUP.

Fantastic surgeon. Surgical team, office staff, and nutritionists are superior (my 1st surgeon, Dr Brolin was great but his nutrionist was worthless). Both surgeons did stress aftercare.
I liked the surgeon but didn't like going to Philly to see him. I stopped seeing him after 6 mos and now just go to my PCP. I know the "routine" and I know what I have to do to continue to lose weight.

I was referred to Dr. Raper by my primary care physician, Dr. Michael Attanazio, MD. It all happened so quickly! I went to HUP, the Hospital of the University of PA. I met with him and a nutritionist and was given a pack of scripts for various pre-operative testing. This was in May of 2005. By the end of June 2005, all of my testing was complete, insurance approved and surgery date set! Now I make it sound very easy, but it wasn't all that way...I agonized over having this procedure for about 6 years and went through several insurances before I was secure it would happen and be covered. Dr. Raper is a fantastic surgeon and I couldn't ask for better. I hope you will read more about me.

I just realized (on the eve of my 6-month checkup) that I never put anything in for my review of Dr. Raper.

Dr. Raper (I think of him as "Dr. Steve - although I haven't called him that yet) is an excellent surgeon. He is compassionate, has an excellent bedside manner and is an excellent technical surgeon.

He sat down with Geri and I and discussed with us all of the risks and benefits of the surgery on my initial visit.

He took the time on the day of my surgery to talk with me before the procedure.

He also took the time during my operation to "run my bowel" to remove adhesions that had occurred from my ruptured bowel in 1997 and resultant emergency appendectomy. He could have left these alone and they may have caused problems later on. I am happy that he was so thorough.

After tomorrow, I will have seen him three times since my discharge - at my 3-week, 2-month and 6-month visit. He's taken the time at each of the visits to answer any questions or concerns. He's also been quick to respond the times that I have e-mailed him with questions.

I highly recommend Dr. Raper if you are considering surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. One caveat for those wanting a lap RNY - Dr. Raper only does opens. For a lap, you will need to see his associate Dr. Noel Williams.

Dr. Raper is very much a gentleman. He takes his work and his patients very seriously. He is a humble man, not wishing to take any credit for the great job he did for me.

His staff has been wonderful. My only disappointment has been that his staff has decided to stop publicizing the Penn support website, and I think this cheats newbies out of a very important phase of this process.

His surgical competence is only surpassed by his wonderful bedside manner. He is a very kind man and treats his patients very well. In turn, his staff does as well.

When I first met Dr, Raper he was very direct, he make you feel very comfortable in knowing that he knows what he is doing, Dr, Raper is highly recomanded in Philadelphia at this hospital, he has very strong supprt system as a team. everyone of his pt, has nothing but positive things to say about him. Dr.Raper has more than 1000 surgerys under his belt with very littel complications of any of his pts. The staff is very friendly and structured, they make you feel safe about your decsions to have this surgery and asures you that they will do their best to see you through this.

AFTER REVIEWING A PACKET OF INFO SENT REGARDING BARIATIC SURGERY AT UNIVERSITY OF PENN. I CALLED FOR MY APPT IN LATE JULY. MY FIRST APPT WITH DR STEVEN RAPER WAS FEB 18TH. I HAVE NO DOUBTS ABOUT THIS SURGEON. HE TOLD ME ALL THE PROS AND CONS OF THIS SURGERY. HE GAVE ME ALL THE TIME NEEDED TO ANSWER MY CONCERNS. I HAVE HEARD MANY GREAT REFERENCES FOR DR RAPER AND HIS STAFF. I WAS TOLD THE RISKS.... ALSO THE RISKS OF NOT HAVING THIS SURGERY IF I DINT DO SOMETHING ABOUT LOSING WIEGHT. DR RAPER EVEN ASKED WHOM I'D HAVE HELPING ME AT HOME WHILE I RECUPPERATED... WE COVERED SOUP TO NUTS PARDON THE PUN...I FELT VERY COMFORTABLE WITH DR RAPER.. HE WAS VERY EASY TO TALK TO.
