The Dr.Vanderkolk and his staff are very highly recommend for RNY. I had my surgery on 6/13/07 I had all the confidence in him as my Dr. He took time to make sure that my wife and I had all the information to make this life changing decision His staff is great [Thank You Anne ] you have great knowlegle about this surgery and the support need to be successful. If I had to do over Dr. Vanderkolk would be the only Dr. I would go too.

Dr Vanderkolk and Scholten were great. I felt at ease knowing that I had the two best surgeons in GR doing my revision. They treated me great and I felt like I was in great hands with the both of them doing my surgery.

My first impression wasn't the best, to be honest. I asked a question about liquids post op, and he said we would prefer you stay on liquids for the first two years post op, but YOU PEOPLE kept calling the office to complain about no food...At that point I would have left and found another surgeon if there had been any others who participated with my ins.

My later visits with Dr.VanderKolk were much better. I have put the first meeting down to "he had a bad day". The office staff was informative.

The office is very careful to tell you of all possible complications and they do not sugar coat anything. The after-surgery care has been great so far. They are very concerned about pt's nutritional and emotional needs post-op. They have several support groups set up all run by a really nice lady, Anne. I have found the groups to be very helpful, although they are scattered all over West Michigan and there aren't any very close to me. I plan to attend one through another surgeons office which is about 20 minutes from my home.

My greatest problem with the surgery came from my insurance company. They denied me over a year ago. When I did receive approval, I only had two and a half weeks before my insurance company changed.

Dr. VanderKolks office worked with my GP to get all my testing completed and I was able to have RNY four days before my insurance changed the first of November. The office worked really hard to schedule everything in such a short time, and I can't thank them enough for that.

Overall, I have had a good experience with Dr. VanderKolk and I would feel comfortable recommending him to anyone.

Dr. VanderKolk is a no-nonsence and efficient surgeon. During surgery he encountered scar tissue and had to change the gameplan. This put me under anesthia longer than expected which lengthened my time in recovery. Because I take a lot of medication, he had to put in a G-tube. I then had to administer my medications with a syringe into that tube. Fortunately he could take it out in 6 weeks.

My follow-up care has been attentive, clear and supportive.

Very personable and knowledgable. My impression is the same. Office staff is very helpful and patient. Sometimes it can be frustrating because the office never seems to be running on time. I always have to wait.....at least 45 minutes or more. I looked at several different programs before deciding on this program. I liked the steps that I had to go through before the surgery and I like the structure of the aftercare program. YES, the risks were discussed....especially by the nurse which was scary but helpful. I like him and would definately recommend him and his program. Both are important to me!!!

my first thought was oh my he's so young!
After talking to him I realized he did know
what he was doing and felt more at ease. I had been waiting for dr Schoulten but his waiting list goes on n on was told Dr Vanderkolk worked side by side with dr Schoulten and is as good as Dr Schulten but no waiting list so I decided to go with him although I am still a bit nervious about it .
He went into details of the surgery and complacations related with surgery ,aftercare.
He stressed this was only a tool to help me and that the only way this tool would help me lose weight was to use it correctly. He and his staff would be there helping me throughout my journey that made me feel alot better knowing . He seem to be very concerned as to my seriousness about the surgery couldn't stress enough how it was a major surgery and not to be taken lightly .He also gave me a picture of what is changed or done through surgery.
It's been over a year since that first visit so I'm sure I will be repeting this which is good because I now have many questions to ask him. Hope he's ready for me lol.

Dr. VanderKolk is amazing. He is professional yet light hearted w/ a sense of humor. He makes you feel very comfortable.

I have had nothing but pleasant experiences with Dr. VanderKolk and his office (Academical Surgical Associates/ASA).

Very brisk and all business.
Continues to be brisk, but caring and competent.
Very helpful office staff
Always in a rush, difficult to get in all my questions
Addressed the risks of surgery by requiring an hour long office visit with his nurse going over all possible complications, their symptoms.
He is an excellent surgeon, very competent, bedside manner o.k.
