Northern Virginia Community Hospital Hospital

Would not reccommend it to anyone. I work in healthcare and am well aware of what nursing care should be like. The care at Northern Virginia did not come close to what I expected. Had I not styed on them constantly about things that should have been obvious, who knows what mistake might have been made.

I had not heard very good things about this hospital by several people. However, I had a great experience. I was first placed in a room with a 90 year old woman that was freezing the entire time and wouldn't allow the air condition to be turned on. I didn't even ask to be moved. The nurse came and said that she didn't want me to be uncomfortable and they had found me a private room. It has a huge bathroom which was nice since my fiancee was there to help me move around. I had one nurse that didn't act as if she really cared but she wasn't mean but the first night I had great people.

I stayed at NVCH for 11 nights due to some post-op complications, and I was not at all impressed by the care I received there. While the hospital has its good points (it's much smaller and quieter than Fairfax, with a more personal feel), I felt that the standard of care was below par. The nursing staff was very inconsistent -- some nurses were excellent, but others had clear deficits in knowledge, skill, and judgment. Requests for PRN medications were often not filled for up to 2-3 hours, and almost no nursing care was available for two hours each morning and two hours each evening during "shift changes". Most seriously, a dangerous medication error was made by the hospital in my case (I was given the wrong blood thinner when I had an invasive procedure scheduled for the next morning). I did not feel safe at NVCH. I had a family member staying in my room 24/7 and it got to the point that she did not feel comfortable leaving me alone even for short periods of time. I should say that I seem to have had an especially bad experience at NVCH, and other patients I know have been very happy with the care they received there. Both my surgeon and the hospital staff were very concerned about the problems I went through and have been working to ensure that no future patient has a similar experience.

I felt cared for. That's vital of course. In intake... reassurance... and laughs. Once I got to my private room... several people came in to care for me, make sure I was hooked up to this and that and checked on me frequently. When I called for a nurse... I was accomodated within minutes. I walked up and down the hallway and was met with encouragement. I hope never to go back... but thankfully the experience was positive.

The nurses during my stay left a lot to be desired. None of them could insert an IV correctly. Took 6 nurses to finally get one in. I have never had problems with IV in the past. And when I went back a few days later with a complication, the nurse in ER was shocked when she saw the bruises all over my arms.
