Staten Island University Hospital (North Site) Hospital
My stay was pretty routine with the exception of two bad experiences. The first was the "roommate from hell" who called the nurse at the top of her voice 24/7 for help. The second was on my third day there, they ran out of large-size gowns, and I sat in a chair in my room with my ass hanging out for 3 1/2 hours asking and waiting for a gown that fit till finally my husband called the patient advocate and ripped them a new asshole. After that, I had all the gowns I wanted.
The entire experience - from pre-surgical testing to the day I was discharged - was just wonderful. Every staff member I encountered was friendly, helpful and never made me feel out of the ordinary. The only drawback was during the leak test - the equipment was too small for me to fit on. The technician apologized and moved me to another room to have the test done on a different table. The nursing staff was pleasant and answered the call bell within 5 minutes. Not one of them had a problem with helping me when I went to the bathroom (I wasn't able to reach). I kept apologizing and all they kept saying was, "Don't worry about it, we understand." I highly recommend this hospital!
Overall I have 3 negative things to say about it. The first being with medication. I need something for the nausea and even though it was approved by my doctor it took hours for them to get it to me, even after reminding them a few times. The second being, I was moved from my room and no one updated my chart or file, friends couldn’t find me and the doctor even had to look for me. Third, someone made a mess in the bathroom and it took over an hour before someone came and clean it up.
Where do I begin? I'm 5 days post-op and returned home this morning. They didn't have my pain meds ready so I sat in recovery with a freshly opened abdomen screaming. They took my morphine pump away by accident and couldn't help my until the doctor came, which took hours. I layed in my own filth b/c no one would help my when I had my first bowel movement. I was told by the aide to "do the best you can" as far as wiping. Pain management was awful and I honestly think that I would have been better off at home with a nurse's aide. DO NOT expect much from this hospital or Dr. Macura and his staff. I haven't seen Dr. Macura since May 28th!!! He sends his residents and one of his associates around once in awhile. Disgusting.
All in all, the care I received was excellent. The staff from the cheif resident to the nurse's aids were caring, kind, and sensitive to the needs of obese patients. Not one person made me feel out of place or uncomfortable. I hired a private duty nurse's aide the first night, and it was a waste of money. Not a single press on the call button took more than 5 minutes to get a response. Sure, there were times the staff got really busy, and had to prioritize, but you HAVE to be sensitive to that, also.
Staten Island Hospital is a wonderful, clean place. The first thing I noticed when wheeled into my room was the decor. I had a wonderful, angel of a nurse aide who was there the first couple of days. She was attentive and did not treat me as a burden to her. I was a little nervous about someone having to wash me... but like I said she was an angel. Unfortunately she was not there for my last couple of days there and I got stuck with someone who was pregnant and was doing just enuff to get her paycheck. I only had one RN who I was glad when she went off duty. Overall my stay there was ok (I mean for pete's sake, I was not there that long! [4 days]).
