UMass Memorial Hospital

I loved my stay at the hospital so much, I wanted to go back after I was home! =] The west 3 staff .. every one of them were amazing. I appreciate everything they have done for me during my stay. Without hospital staff like them, WLS wouldn't be possible. And I believe they truly care, which is so important.

My stay at UMASS Memorial on West 3 for my RNY was a pleasant experiance. The staff, including nurses, aides, interns, doctors, housekeepers, dietary and anyone else I may have missed were all so kind and helpful. Post-op I had a really severe migraine and my roomate was discharged and a new not so quiet one came in, one complaint from me and I was brought to another room with a very quiet roomate. The nurses, aides and interns were constantly asking if there was anything else they could do for me or get me, my pain was managed very well and they did there best to get my migraine medications and get that under control. I had a lot of bleeding post-op from my incisions and they monitored the sites and my blood levels very closely. I am very pleased overall and would recommend West 3 for post-op stays.

The PCAs were competant and sensitive and attentative. A couple of the nurses gave me the distinct impression they could not be bothered. My pain pump was supposed to allow med dispensing as often as 12 minutes, but it never dispensed with less than 22 minutes between doses. When I said this repeatedly to at least 3 nurses, they kept telling me to push the button and they must have thought I had no idea what that meant, because they actually posted it on my whiteboard. I also had one obnoxious, insensitive nurse ask me if I ever tried to lose weight before! No lady, I just happened to find the one program in the country that will perform major surgery as a first treatment. There was no need for her to ask that question, other than to show how she felt superior because she did not have the problem I have. People like this should not be let near people during their weakest time.

My criticism comes in toward the hospital stay itelf. It is good to go through all your classes and to re read all the post diet restrictions you learn. The staff was not in tune with the needs of a bari. patient. My "food" would not get delivered and I had to ask several times for my jello and broth. I had to sleep in the recovery room and was there until 4:00 PM the next afternoon after my surgery. They had 24 x 7 CONSTRUCTION on the floor above me - jackhammers, nailing, you name it and when I complained, they said, oh you never sleep in a hospital! Usually from nurses not construction! I am laughing because most of it was minor in comparison any complications I could have had. No matter where you elect to have your surgery, you have to do is go in prepared to take care of yourself and make sure your needs are met.
