Referral BMI vs Current BMI

Hi, guys.

I had my social work assessment today at TWH, and I was told there that I might not qualify for the surgery because my BMI at the time of referral was only 37.5.  I thought that would be enough because I have a comorbidity, but apparently it's not an important enough comorbidity to count—it's depression.  Why even put that on the list of comorbidities if it doesn't count?

My BMI now is over 40, but the social worker told me that might not matter, because it was under the threshold at the time of referral.  She's going to ask her manager and let me know next week, but I'm feeling disheartened.  I don't want to have to go through the whole referral process and months of waiting all over again.

Has anybody else had this problem?

I didn't have this problem but it would make sense to me that they would not make you start all over. Just keep thinking positive and remember that if they do make you restart the process, they haven't declined you completely...just postponed things a bit. Hang in there...good things come to those who wait! Kim

Who was your social worker? I found the one I saw was very negative. I didn't have the best opinion of her. She asked me about my support system and I explained I have a good group of girl friends who are all excited for me and some might even consider the process but want to see how I do, she asked me if they would be jealous of me because of my weight loss. I was kind of taken back by the question, I'm an adult and so are my girl friends, some I've known for 20+ years we don't get jealous we celebrate each other. Is this a common thing for adult women to be jealous of each other?

Anyway if it's the same person I wouldn't worry she seemed to be the doom and gloom and worse case scenario type.

Is it a common thing for adult women to be jealous of each other? OMG yes it most certainly is unfortunately! I would be extremely surprised if no one in your close group of friends never felt envious of each other - it's human nature. Weight is a personal, touchy subject to begin with and if you have friends who would also qualify for surgery, there may well be some "feelings" as you lose weight simply because they wi**** could happen for them too.

The social worker wasn't being doom and gloom, she was being realistic.

I didn't have this problem either but was wondering if you have had a sleep test yet!  Sometimes they discover you have sleep apnea whichay be considered a comorbity?

I haven't! I was under the impression they didn't always ask for it, and kind of assumed they wouldn't ask me to do one. Is that not right?

My BMI was a little over 40 when I was referred, with 3 comorbidities.  I'm now a little under 30.  Even then they seemed to indicate I barely qualified.

Just in case anyone was wondering, I got a call from the social worker today, and her manager confirmed that it's fine for me to proceed with my scheduled appointments.  Next up: Nurse Practitioner on May 25th.

Did you have your surgery? How are you doing.

I got my referal on Dec 12/2016, my bmi is 37, I also have depression, low thyroid and a history of weight loss struggle.

I really hope to be approved. Fingers crossed.

I did have my surgery, almost a year ago now.  I'm doing well and have lost about 125lbs.

Good luck with everything!
