I've seen a lot of people mention jerky lately. Do you just eat regular store bought? Or is there a lower sugar type you buy ?

I make my own... Look up presto jerly seasoning. Keys are to get very good cuts of meat- you don't need a dehydrator, just an oven and some toothpicks.

I buy one made here locally in OK. It's Ralph's beef jerky. The nutritional information has it at  100 cal per ounce, and 0 carbs. I take that as less than 1 carb, and just count it as 1. However, I can't eat 1 ounce of this stuff as a serving... 1 ounce usually lasts me 2-3 servings.

As an avid backpacker and hiker this is a regular issue for me.  Please note I am more than 3 years out so I can eat things others maybe cant. I am also allergic to mammal meat so beef and pork of any kind is out.  I am always on the look out for lightweight portable snacks.

My go to snacks for carrying in my pack are:

Powdered big train protein mixed with an instant coffee packet (just add ho****er)

Apple and cheese (or really any fruit and cheese)

Steves paleo dried strawberries

Quest bars (not a lot of sugar and do okay in the heat)

home made trail mix of nuts and dried fruit and such

I also have to deal with blood sugar issues. I would recommend a small bottle of glucose tablets you keep in the glove compartment and a quest bar or two.

I can honestly say I have never had food in my car.

I eat 6 small meals a day, so I don't "snack" between meals.  All of my meals are planned, and I am generally pretty good about keeping to that plan (but not perfect.  Never perfect).  I have not carried food with me since the early days of my RNY, except what I pack during the week for my planned meals while I am at work.  I think the reason I don't carry food with me is because I got over the idea that I might have a "food emergency" when out and not have anything with me to eat.  Which I have come to realize is crazy, fat girl thinking.  I don't have blood sugar issues, so there is no such thing as a "food emergency" for me.  It will not kill me to wait a little for a planned meal.  Hunger is not an emergency.

Great answer.

I hate the term "cheat" for meals, or even whole days. Snack is in the same category -- to my ear, it sounds like extra food. I eat by the clock, so everything is a planned meal. No snack, cheating, sampling, tasting.

It's what keeps me on track.

Exactly!  I feel the same way.  I eat 6 small meals a day so I am not tempted to eat off of my plan, since there is always a meal just around the corner.  The term "snack" or "eating between meals" sounds like cheating to me, and all of my meals are planned.
