So, hubby and I will finally  be applying for our passports this weekend.  My surgery is the last week of March.

The State Dept website says that processing passports is currently taking 4-6 weeks.  Anyone here have any recent experience with this, and know if this time is reliable?  I really don't want to pay the extra sixty bucks to expedite it if I don't have to, but I don't want to risk it either if they are known for taking their time.

When we requested ours they told us the same time frame.  I think we received them in less then 3 weeks.

Do they have enhanced drivers licenses where you live???
Much cheaper and serve the same purpose for crossing borders by foot or sea. Just not when traveling across borders by plane.
They are only 15.00 and I had mine in one week.
Check with your DOL.

Nope, no enhanced licenses here.  I saw those online, but they aren't available in my state.  I was looking at getting the passport card, though, instead of the book.  Much cheaper than the book and will meet my needs for this trip, since I will crossing into Mexico by land.  Plus, I figure I will need to update my picture once I get to goal, and that will require a new passport... so no  need to spend all that money on something I will only use once before I have to replace it :)

Ugh, don't remind me! I got a normal passport and have only used it the once. I look NOTHING like the picture and I'm pretty sure no one would let me over any borders with it now.

Make sure you tell them in the application when your trip is scheduled - they really do try to help if they know your trip is soon.
