Personally I think that the airline handled this badly...HOWEVER she knows she is big, she knows the seats are 17 inches wide in my mind given that the airline is pretty open about larger people needing to buy 2 seats she coulda saved herself a whole lot of embarrasement by buying 2 seats. I dont have to like the policy of airlines or the fact that they seem to have smaller seats than any other venue out there but that is also why I dont fly. I wont go on a plane until I know I will fit and not fill more than my seat alone. Last time I flew I weighed about 50 pounds more and I just barely fit and it was dang uncomfortable and i scrunched myself as much as possible towards the window so the person next to me didnt feel I was taking their seat over.

I agree 100%.   I don't want to sit next to someone who takes over my space too - flying is uncomfortable enough without having to share any more of my personal space with a complete stranger!

She knew she was too big for the one seat but thought she'd get away with it!   Airlines are a business and while I think they DO try to accommodate those with special needs, they are in it to make a profit and owe her NOTHING!    I hope she loses her law suit and continues to lose weight for the sake of her health ...

It is a double standard.....

Fat is about the only category of discrimination that is openly allowed.

I have sat next to normal size ladies who had an "under two year old" and it is just as tight, if not tighter. I also sat next to an old guy with an oxygen tank once.

Are they asked to leave? Are they required to buy another seat? No, in fact, they get to pre-board to get whatever seat they like best.

Fat is part of life and they fly too.

The ones I really don't like ot be near are the ones in the seat ahead of me *****cline all the way into my lap!

Yeah, but as long as they stay in their seat when they recline they are technically not in your space they are in their space. The chairs are made to recline for a reason.
When a "fat" person takes part of my seat then they should be asked to at least pay for part of my seat.

its handled differently here in Canada - you cannot make a fat passenger buy two seats - the contract with the airline is for carriage, not for a seat.

that said, I spend every flight trying my damndest not to infringe on someone else's space - I wish more skinny people or people with kids would do that...I'm tired of skinny people sitting crosslegged in their seats with their shoes or worse, grubby feet rubbing on my slacks. Or squirmy toddlers whacking me as they flail about. Ugh.

(so glad I don't have to travel for work this year - I lost track of the number of planes I was on last year)
