Chronic diarrhea

I am almost 1 year post op and for the past several months, I have been experiencing chronic diarrhea.  I remember reading prior to surgery this can happen.  Does anyone out there have any suggestions?  I started taking a probiotic but it hasn't really helped.  This is not dumping syndrome - it is daily runny bowel movements.  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Knowing which surgery helps others help you.

Unfortunately I can't be of much help as I had the DS...but I hope you get an answer.

Has it resulted in you falling below your goal weight? Are you feeling tired/worn out from it? How is your daily diet for protein/fat/carbs? Are you trying any new foods that seemed to spur this change? Were you regular before or having issues with constipation? What does your PCP say? Have you discussed with your surgeon?

Please consult your surgeon & nutritionist for how to do it their way.  Biggest regret? Not doing this 10 years ago! Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!

If you have bacterial overgrowth, which is my first suspicion, then just taking probiotics at this point is kind of like putting out a fire with a squirt gun.  Talk to your doctor about a course of Flagyl.  They will probably want to do a stool culture but the results aren't always accurate since there are a lot of different kinds of bacteria that the cultures don't cover.  Anyway, if it is bacterial overgrowth the Flagyl should take care of it and then you need to be diligent about probiotics.  I prefer to eat my probiotics so I eat a lot of cultured yogurt as well as sour cream and cottage cheese that is cultured.  You can even make your own.  Right now I have Activia every day, one or two.  I used to have chronic bacterial overgrowth before my revision, most likely due to a blind loop.  I haven't had a problem since my revision but I keep up on the probiotics just in case.

I am wondering if you were taking antibiotics prior to the diarrhea starting?  That seems to whack out the balance in a lot of people.

Take a dose of Citrucel fiber supplement every twelve hours.  This is just a side effect of RNY and not being able to eat enough fiber.  The fiber supplement will take care of it.  Many people with RNY have runny stools, most do not report it.  Benefiber did not help me, but the colon-rectal specialist I consulted told me to take Citrucel or Fibercom and that solved the problem for me.

Common causes of diarrhea:

Bacterial imbalance (RNY or DS) - Prevention - probiotics, from a pill to a daily serving of yogurt really helps.  If it moves on to an infection, then a round of antibiotics to kill all bacteria, followed by the preventative dose of probiotics afterwards.

Lactose Intolerance - from all dairy or singled-out items (for me, it's only straight milk).

Artificial Sweeteners - anything that ends in 'tol is the devil.

Simple Carbs - breads, pastas, rice, sugar

Onions - runny and burns, makes me sad cuz I love em'.
