Am I too old to benefit from WLS?

I'm 53 years old and I'm 150 lbs overweight. Can I expect that my age might hinder my ability to lose the weight I need to lose after surgery?

i doubt it would hinder. i was at a support group meeting last night where people well into their 60's had it and lost a bunch of weight. everyone loses weight differently, i just have a feeling you're not too old at 53. no expert, though. just sharing what i have seen to be true

I am so encouraged by the responses that I received to my first posted question. This is such an awesome site. I'm looking forward to learning from those that have journeyed ahead and I hope I can inspire others that will follow behind me.

OMGOSH NO!  Unless you have some major health issues you are never to old to do what is needed to get healthy.  I had my surgery 10 years ago and I was 48.  I recently experience some regain and have taken 20 pounds off. So my friend, it's never too late.

We suggest you research all your options for WLS and OH is the right place for that.  Once you have reviewed your options surgery wise and decided on one then your next step is to find a surgeon.  We can help you with that.      Here are some links that will be helpful in your research. If you have not done so, contact your insurance company and verify if they cover WLS and if so what procedures.  If you have Medicaid and or Medicare, contact them to verify if they cover WLS, if so, what procedures and if there are any pre-surgery qualifications you have to meet.     Let us know if you need anything else.

Of course not! I am banded which gives the slowest weight loss and no malabsorption. I was banded aged 56, lost 110lbs (all my excess weight) in just over 15 months. I am now 64 and still reaping all the wonderful benefits. When I saw your thread, I thought you were going to say you were in your 70s! And I was still going to say "do it"!

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

53?   53?   When did 53 become too old for anything (other than birthing and even that has been tested!!!)

I had mine at 42 and am now 52 and wouldn't have changed a thing!

You will lose as much weight as you work your programme for - read, read, read and learn how to work this surgery to the best possible effect and long term maintenance.

53 will be the new 33 if you do it right

I am 59 (60 in  Feb) and had RYN five months ago. Pre and Post op weigh loss is 84 pounds total (31 pre-op). I am so glad I did this. Knee pain is diminishing and mobility is improved. I definitely don't think you are too old. The weight loss will help you in so many ways, especially as you age.

I was sleeved 5/14, and doing great.  I'm 63 years old, and have had no complications or any problems.  I feel wonderful - the weight is coming off, and I'm dropping sizes like crazy.  I no longer have to use a wheelchair to get from point A to point B.  I do have mobility issues - have neuropathy - but I developed that a few years ago.  But I am able to walk with a cane, and not be out of breath.  Hey, you're just a kid -- GO FOR IT.  Otherwise, I'll come kick your butt - because I can fly on an airplane now without having to worry about buying a second seat!
