I want to eat something so bad. The only thing I chew is ice chips. How did you guys get through the first few weeks?

I kept my hands and mind busy.  Knit, do puzzles, go for a walk....  YOU CAN DO THIS!

I had the sleeve 5 years ago and I am revising to DS soon, but I remember the desire to eat was so strong. I wasn't hungry, I just wanted food. I was recovering pretty well and moving after about 3-4 days. My mom was with me and she would drive me places. I distinctly remember going to the mall, where mom got chinese (and yes, she ate it in front of me) and I strained my egg drop soup. But the smell of all the foods....HARD. I had been on a two week liquid diet before surgery so I just think that made it worse. Then we went and saw $1 movies. And, you guessed it, POPCORN. Yeah, it was hard, but try savory broths, strained of course. I drank the sweet protein drinks but having the salty, savory liquid helped.

And just staying busy as much as possible.

The first couple months are the worst.  Keep busy and change your life forever!  Its worth it.  Its hard to create new habits but its the only way to go.

even now when i get that feeling i try to take a few deep breaths and have liquid instead of food (water, tea, coffee, protein shake, etc...). obviously you can't have tea or coffee now, but sipping on water or a protein shake might help. good luck and deep breaths. you will learn to deal with it.

My worst time was  5 to 10 days post surgery.  So, you will not feel like this forever.  You had major surgery, and you are just now really coming off the anesthesia, truly this is just a phase in the recovery.  Do not be concerned that you will feel like this in another week.

Stay busy, do things you like.  Read your favorite magazines - I went to the local library for an afternoon, I was surprised by all the magazines they had.  Take a shower (If you have been cleared). Go to the local beauty school for a cheap hair blow-out.

Be kind to yourself, you just had major surgery.

Sugar free popsicles... never ate them before and really haven't eaten them since, but they were a lifesaver!

Sugar-free jello counts as a liquid. It lets you pretend to eat something solid. Soon you'll probably be allowed yogurt, which also helps break up the sea of protein shakes and broth.

It feels like this stage lasts forever, but it's kinda like getting over the flu - you've just got to work with your doctor and power through it, knowing it will be over soon enough.

I was put on liquid diet a week before my RnY surgery. Then I had complications. For two weeks I was NOTHING by mouth. Then I progressed a week at a time from clear liquid to full liquid and approved today to go to pureed food. I will be on this for three weeks. I m grateful that there is such a thing as being fed by IV. I found that brushing my teeth without swallowing, helped my mouth believe it had eaten because it was clean.
