Have any studies been done on just cutting the vagus nerve??

Many of you will not know what I am talking about...That's OK. In general, many RNY and Sleeve patients have one side of their vagus nerve cut and cauterized...Near their stomach. I am just wondering if those of you who would know, (please no "I've never heard of this")...Has there been any animal or human studies (procedures) where that alone was the surgery. Did it help with weightloss? Is there any empirical data on this procedure? Thanks...Brian

Google Vagotomy. Here's an LA Times article from a few years ago that mentions some studies.

I attribute my lack of appetite to having had my vagus nerve cut.

Why the nasty ? I think that's a great question! I wonder if that would work. I will be 14 years post this month and don't feel hunger

RNY on 08/21/12

The studies I had seen showed a fairly small and temporary loss. If it was much better than that, it would be a simple answer, and commonly done.

My surgeon did not cut my vagus nerve. I asked him about it prior to surgery. He told me about the studies cutting the nerve without RNY, and about studies of RNY both with and without cutting the vagus nerve. He said those studies showed no difference in results post RNY between the cut and non-cut patients.

6'3" tall, male.

Highest weight was 475. RNY on 08/21/12. Current weight: 198.

M1 -24; M2 -21; M3 -19; M4 -21; M5 -13; M6 -21; M7 -10; M8 -16; M9 -10; M10 -8; M11 -6; M12 -5.
