Trying to get back on track with my vitamins, and I'm just wondering if I'm taking too much. My D3 is a 5000 IU a day, but my Calcium and Multivitamin also had D3. My friend who also had surgery (with different provider) was only asked to take 2000 IU a day. I've looked at some websites that say 2500, etc a day. Real curious what dose of every vitamin people are taking.

I don't take a separate D3 supplement; both my multi vitamin and my calcium includes it and my bi-annual blood tests show my levels are normal. I watch this one closely since pre-WLS I had low D.

that can vary a lot between patients. Have you had labs done recently? Vitamin D deficiencies are very common (and not just among bariatric patients - we're talking ANYBODY), so people with lower levels are advised to take higher doses of it than people who have normal levels. I had a deficiency prior to surgery and had to take prescription D3 (at a very high level) for a few weeks, and I'm pretty sure right after surgery I started out taking a higher dosage of OTC vitamin D then I do now. If I were you, I'd have labs done if you haven't had them done recently to see where your blood level is at. Your clinic can then tell you if you should increase, decrease, or stay with your current dosage.

P.S. I currently take 3000 IU's three times a week. But again, that's just me. Your recommended level could be different.

I get a lot of sunlight in Florida and during my three day a week lap swims in the pool ... that said I LIKE Flintstones sour gummy bear vities.

Mainly because they taste like candy and are very easy to get down every day .

I would b so afraid of overdose if I took anywhere near the levels you do now .. just get out n sit in the sun you'll feel SO much better then reevaluate. (((()))) hugs

I think one really has to look at doctor recommendations as just that, recommendations.

The dose one ends up taking should be determined by lab work.

everyone is different. I take 50,000, yes, fifty thousand, IU of Vitamin D a day, every day, and labs ,done every 6 months, show that to be an appropriate dose for me.

what do your labs tell you?

I also take a high dose of vitamin D to stay in the normal range - 2 x 50k iu of dry D3 per week.

Vitamin D is fat soluble, so it's important to not take too much. Always be guided by your regular lab levels.

I guess I should have also mentioned that my recommended dosages of 5000 IU daily is not specific to me, it is that same dosage they recommend everyone through my healthcare. It just alarmed me how my Doctors recommend 5000 to everyone while my friend's only recommends 2000.

I have not had any labs done recently, I was just curious. I was going to contact my doctor directly after hearing some of your responses.

doctors are people. They all have different opinions about how things should be done.

this includes aftercare plans. No two doctors will likely have the same plan.

surgeons are cutters. They do t really like the aftercare part. That's why they are cutters. The fo k ow, however, That they hAve to give a guideline for after care to bariatric patients. Unless they have a strong bariatric practice and strong aftercare, their plans are just a beginning guideline.

That is why getting your labs done , at least yearly, is mandatory. You can't go by what your friend or anybody else is doing. It doesn't even matter what they are doing, cause you aren't them. It doesn't matter what any of us are doing either. The only thing that matters is you and what your body is telling you it needs.

I would add to this ...If you see a level of something like iron beginning to drop. Monitor that more closely and be proactive about it.-Doctors will not get concerned about it even should it drop slightly below normal.Once it is too low -it can be hard to get levels back to your normal... esp true on iron..

An Internist in after care once told me-" liver is the perfect food.- it has everything the human body requires to utilize iron." I ate it for 5 days a week /2 times a day- for a total of 8 weeks ...to begin my HGB, and Hct's to begin to gain. I have transitioned to desiccated so i don't need to taste it.i did not tolerate feso4, and could not take the horse pill sized ones...
