Question regarding lab orders

I know some of you have written your own lab orders so that you get what you need.  My question is this:  Do you have to have a signature on the lab orders to have them run and/or covered by insurance?  Or can I just take the typed up lab request in with the diagnosis code and have it run and faxed to your surgeon and PCP?

This would make my life so much easier, as I am in Ohio and my surgeon is in CA.  My PCP is trying, but just isn't "getting it" yet....

Thanks in advance,
Susan

I know a place where you can get excellent answers to that question.

Susan,
I'min the same situation as you.....Dr. K was my surgeon and I'm in OK. Dr K's office emails the lab order to me and I fax it to my PCP's office. An ordering physician is needed to bill insurance.

Gail,

Does Dr. K's office request the full labs?  Or is it a limited set?

Thank you,

Susan

It's pretty complete. I'm not sure if he routinely orders "6 month labs". But that's what I asked for and got. Did you do labs at 3 months?

I actually did the first set closer to 4 months.  I had given my PCP Vitalady's list, but didn't get everything ordered...missing some vitamin levels and a lipid panel.  I emailed Dr. K's office today, so we will see what I get.

Thanks for your help,

Susan

The nice thing about Dr. K's orders is that each lab is coded extensively. The only problems I've had are with the lab missing something that was ordered.

I did my labs at about 31/2 mo, 7mo then last week. I'm anxious to see the results.

I got the orders from Dr. K's office this morning.  That was easy!

That's good, Susan. It's worked really well for me and they're really quick to email them to me. I always tell my PCP's nurse that she, my PCP, can add anything else she wants.

With this last draw I had my own copy of the order and doible checked everything. I still worry that they'll (the lab) will miss something.

How are you doing? Are you planning to go back to CA for a visit with Dr. K?
