I am thinking of having the ds, and I need info on good doctors in my area. I live in southwestern Ohio. Anyone know of a skilled surgeon in my area. Thank you

Hi Renay,
Ohio is so close to Michigan. You need to look into Dr Kemmeter in Grand Rapids, at Grand Health Partners . I am 6 months out from D.S. with him. He is one of the best vetted surgeons in the country, on the D.S. approved surgeons list. You can contact his  coordinator through St Mary's Hospital, Grand Rapids site, or www.Grandhealthpartners.com.

Many people here on this site are patients of his with very successful D.S. surgeries, and excellent after care. I have no compications with my D.S.  His instructions for surgery preparation  and pre surgery advice gave me confidence going in for a D.S. I can hardly believe the quick results I have had losing 104 lbs in the last 6 months, with the help of his nutritionist, sports physiologist, and support group lectures.

He takes good care of people from out of town. I traveled to him because he was recommended to me by another surgeon from St Mary's. I have had 2 major surgeries in 2011  at St Mary's. I had superior care each time. I  would  absolutely do it all again in a heart beat.  The D.S. was worth all the preparation, and I would definitely choose Dr. Kemmeter for any of my surgeries. If you have any questions, message me. I would be happy to answer you.

I just went to your profile -- is the info. outdated that said you have a BMI of 32.1?  That is too low for insurance to cover a DS, and most American DS surgeons would turn you down even as a self-pay, I think.  If you've regained since then, you may be able to proceed with a DS.

The only surgeon in Ohio who does the DS pretty regularly is Dr. Maguire in Dayton.  I have a website for you, http://www.dsfacts.com/North-American-Duodenal-Switch-Surgeo ns.html . The Ohio part lists 2, both part of the same practice, but, I have read that Dr. Teel has stopped doing DSes (and he had been discouraging them for a while before that).  Dr. Maguire does the DS open, not lap, but is still well-respected and experienced.  DSfacts.com is worth reading in all its parts.  It does not list all the surgeons who do the DS, but is based on the site owner's opinions, although in most cases it is in agreement with the opinions about which surgeons are respected in the field by most veteran DS patients.

Re the other states you list
- none in Kentucky
- Michigan has a few; Dr. Kemmeter is esp. well-liked and respected, but he does charge an extra program fee that insurance does not cover (might be around $1k), and, if I recall correctly, makes you buy the pre-op diet shakes from their office store
- Pennsylvania - Dr. Antanivicious (?sp) is newer and not on the list, but in the practice with Dr. Bonanni, whose address is listed at DSfacts.com, along with the warning about Dr. Bonanni's pickiness
- none in West Virginia
If you add Indiana to your list of possible states, Dr. Inman is a good choice.

As far as I know, Dr. Teel is still performing them, had a friend who had a DS with him less than a year ago.  He does them lap, but you have to go in insisting you know what you want.  He really prefers the sleeve and then doing the second surgery if needed.  But, having said that, I'd totally recommend Dr. Teel - he was amazing and yes, he gave me a full DS!

I hope you're right.  I forget where I read it, but I'm thinking here on OH, within the past 5 months I think.  I remember reading that stuck with me, because I'm always disappointed to hear of someone who had done the DS quit the DS.  I don't recall if the patient was told this by a staff person of the practice, or Dr. Teel directly.  Maybe he or his employee say no at first now, and then there is still the possibility that they can be talked into it?  I wouldn't like having to be adversarial with him to get the DS.

Dr Maguire in Dayton, Ohio! He is awesome! Loved his staff. Had an easy surgery. Private rooms. Hospital staff was wonderful and very respectful.

I had my surgery with Dr. John Maguire in Dayton, Ohio.  Someone above said that they didn't think Dr. Teel performed the DS any longer, but here is a link:  http://www.premierhealthspecialists.org/physician.aspx?id=25 260  It says that he does lap DS.

I had my DS done by Dr. Maguire in October because Dr. Teel was totally against it and pretty much said he wouldn't do it (because of people not doing what they are supposed to do post-op was the reason he gave, but if the sleeve didn't work he'd go ahead with a full DS). I said no thank you and went with Dr. Maguire. He is great.

Thank you all for your responses! I am 40 minutes from Dayton, so that would be great. I'm glad to hear the success stories too! Best wishes to all!!
