Trying to start with some exercise pre-op. Any suggestions ? I am 300 pounds and have two replaced knees. I also have bad COPD.  Been cutting food back, drinking protein drinks instead of breakfast and lunch....doing ok so far. I do the stairs as much as I can and we do own a treadmill. Where would I start with that ? By the distance or mins ?  All this is new to me as I never really did alot before. Thanks for any input.

 Hi Missey,

Have you already had surgery or prepping for it?

My thought with the knees is try something low impac****er aerobics is great for that and a good workout! I've also had a couple knee surgeries and personally, I hate the treadmill. Much nicer walking outside :)

I am waiting on one more visit to my PCP next friday that my insurance asked for. Then just waiting on them. I thought the more I can do now the better I may feel before surgery. Haven't talked to my surgeon about it.

I'd start with walking in the shallow end of a pool.  Good resistance and easy on the knees!

You are wise to start now!  It will make your recovery so much easier.

The most important thing you to concentrate on is not injuring yourself.  The pool suggestions are really good, but if you don't have access to a pool, walking is great!  Get a good pair of quality running shoes (go to a running store and get fitted) and then start walking either outside or on the treadmill.  The goal should be to get to a pace where you are breating a bit heavier and breaking a sweat.

Listen to your body!  If you feel pain, or have issues breathing, stop.  Also, stay hydrated.

Most importantly, HAVE FUN!
