knee pain

Started going to the gym on Tuesday. I expected to be sore and don't think I pushed myself too much. I only did the treadmill and elliptical. I jogged a small for a minute at a time then back to a fast walk while on treadmill and my knee's feel like they are swollen and twice their normal size! Don't think they actually are swollen much just feel it. Wondering if after being so over weight for so many years if they are just in too bad of shape to support the impact of jogging? How can you tell if my knee's are really bad or if this is a normal part of my body getting used to running?

It might be that you did overdo it - that's a pretty common thing for people who start exercising.  But it might be worthwhile to visit your local orthopedist and get checked out.  You might have something going on in your knees from years of obesity.

Hang in there!

You might have done too much & you'll have to cut back for awhile. Getting checked out by the Dr is a good idea too. You might be doing more than your knees can handle.

I know sometimes my knees & ankles have moments where they want to take a break, & I take the break, lest I pu**** & do more damage & take longer to heal.

When everything is ok, try less weight bearing activities like swimming or cycling then ease back into the weight bearing ones for a short period of time & build up your endurance from there.

No one surgery is better than the other, what works for one may not work for another. T-Rebel

I don't think they are bad enough to go to a Dr. I took a 'rest' day and have now gone back to only treadmill and bike or elliptical for now. Maybe once my body weight is down more and I'm able to continuously walk or ride bike for a full hour I will try to slowly start jogging again. I would rather go without trying to add jogging or running into a workout than to mess my knee's up so badly that I can't do any physical activities at all due to damage. Wish I had a place to swim nearby :D That would be great. Thanks for the response.

Hey, I was having pain in my knees too. I did some research online and part of my issue was when I would walk A LOT, they would ache afterward and stiffen up. I read that sometimes the calves get tight and it forces your knees to function in an improper way. Since I have started stretching my calves before and after I walk, I don't have any issues at all. I weigh 274 at present down from 393. I have just recently started added some running into my walking and even with that, my knees are doing fine. I am walking a little over three miles at a time, with no issues. I think for me the key was the stretching.

I had a similar experience... my left knee was hurting as well as my shins.  I went to the doctor and he basically said its from being overweight.  I just walked, not jogged, for about 45 minutes a day.  after 5-6 days, it went away.  Keep up the good work!

I cant recommend an icepak/cold pack enough for times like these. My left knee gets so stiff afterward. A good 30 mintues of ice and it is back to "mostly" normal.

PS. I think it is the ****s that we get thinner, get further motivated to improve our health with exercise, and some other body part craps out on us AFTER we got skinnier. it is sort of like "What the heck!>!>!>"

RICE is the best protocol.

Rest! Sit down and Relax/Take a nap!!!

Ice You have to be resting to do this one

Compress - Ace bandage or compression gear

Elevate goes great with Rest and Ice

When I started on my fitness journey I would come home from what my "Run" was and Take a nap with my legs elevated and icepacks wrapped around my knees.

It does get easier, as your body adapts to your activities and you start developing the needed muscles.  Go Slow have fun.  Try the C25K app and in a few weeks you will be amazed at what you can accomplish.
