Hello,

What happens just after surgery and the following day before release? Do they test to see if the new joins leak?

Referred January 7/17, Orientation Humber May 28/17, Meet Dr. August 4/17, TRIO November 3/17, Internist November 21/17, Surgeon again December 21/17, Pre-op assessment January 4/18 and Surgery January 12/18.

I did not have any tests like that. I had a ton of blood work, pee tests, lots of questions about BMs and gas.

Although my hospital stay was not normal. You rest alot and walk alot. They take out the IV at one point to make sure you can drink enough and manage pain before they send you home.

Take hour own shakes. The ones they offer will make you gag. Lol

  • I have followed your advice and packed plenty of undies and premier protein! I hope I'm fine to go home the next day.

I wasn't allowed to have shakes right away. Juice and water They test the pouch during surgery. I had a good experience at the hospital. Slept the first day. Walked a lot the 2nd in on a Tuesday home by the Thursday.

Like Leeann says, they test just after surgery while you are still under. One lady here ended up with blue dye in her hair from the leak test.

As soon as you are able walk, sip, toot, repeat.

Good luck! I will be following your footsteps in 7 weeks. Very ready to get this done but crazy busy time at work so opted to hold off till the beginning of March. Good idea spending the night at a hotel the night before to beat rush hour. I hadn't thought of that but since i live in cottage country it may be a good idea.

They check for leaks before you leave the OR.

I had surgery at 2pm Wednesday home by 2pm Thursday.

Make sure you get up, walk, burp, toot, sip, repeat. I was only allowed clear liquid at the hospital. I moved to protein shakes on the Saturday. Be prepared for everything to feel like it takes forever to ingest. Your life for the next little while is literally going to revolve around food/liquid, prepping, planning, consuming, but it is all well worth it!

You got this!

^^^ all of this was me except the release. I needed the extra night in the hospital - for me it was a blessing. Day 2 was 100% my worst day. So glad I had the nurses to help - my hubby would have been lost and so upset to see me like that.

Jackie is right - Your first few weeks life will LITERALLY revolve around food! It gets annoying, having to think about it every single moment that you are awake. And it can be tough to get it all in and the water too. Hydration is SO important at this stage. But soon enough it is a distant memory. 6+ months ago for me and it kind of feels like a lifetime ago.

Good luck with everything. You seem very prepared so I think you will do great!
