Barium swallow - any experiences
I'm having some troubles with nausea and food feeling like it's stuck. I've been checked and don't have a stricture or ulcer just some irritation in my pouch. They've asked for a low volume barium swallow test to be done (tomorrow).
Do any of you wonderful people have any experience of this and can give me an idea on what to expect? Will I need to have an IV placed? I have super deep veins and I just had an IV last week for the gastroscopy I had done and my only "good" vein is really bruised and sore and I'd rather not need another (especially as I'm due my annual colonoscopy next week and will need an IV for that as well).
Referral to Sudbury: April 28th 2017, Orientation: July 19th 2017, 1:1's: Dec 14th 2017, Follow up with NP: Jan 9th OTN: Jan 18th, Pre-Op: Feb 12th, Surgery: Feb 27th - 2 weeks of Opti. Hospital: St. Joseph's TO with Dr Sullivan.
Height: 5'11, age 38. SW: 323lb CW:196lb
You should be fine and not need an IV. They will ask you to swallow a chalky liquid and then they will xray to see how the fluid passes through your system and if there any obstructions. You will not be able to swallow a lot, but they should understand and let you take it slowly. I would suggest going right home after the test as it may have a laxative effect.
