Ab work after abdominoplasty

Morning folks. I had an abdominoplasty and mastopexy on May 18. Since I was released for full exercise by my PS (about 6 weeks ago), I have been including ab work in my workouts, planks, different crunches, etc. I usually do strength and ab work 3 days a week. I'm finding that sometimes after a workout that for several hours or even the next morning I am having aching and spasms in my upper abs where the muscles were tightened.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks!

I'm over a year post-op from my LBL and I still have to take it easy on my ab work sometimes. I do a lot of mat pilates, which is all core work, and my abs still feel painfully tight sometimes.

You might be doing too much, too soon. You might want to scale back in intensity or duration.

Thanks for your thoughts Gwen. I admit that I've been working my core pretty hard. I skipped the abs on my workout Monday just because they were achy already and I thought...give them a break!

That was wise. Achy tends to mean "recovering," and your muscles need time to recover before you break them down again.

Now that NYMom22 has revived this post, I just wanted to update and say that I still get charlie horses in my abs sometimes and I'm now 9 months post LBL! I don't do a lot of focused ab work right now, but they will happen during yoga when going from rag doll to extended mountain too quickly or when pulling in tight during high plank. They've also happened while on the toilet which is pretty terrible!
