Someone on here (who shall remain nameless) got in a flame war with me the other day and at one point said she was glad I was not her mother. I later found out she's 64!!! I am 36...LOL

When I first moved to the south I used to get really insulted by being called ma'am. Don't let it bother you, its how a person was raised (good manners) or something they've taught themselves to do. I find myself saying ma'am, sir, and putting miss or Mr in front of a persons name if they'rre older than me.

It's a polite way of addressing an adult woman. What do you WANT them to call you??

Ma'am is not an age-thing, it is a politeness thing.    Be glad the person addressing you as such was being polite and respectful!  :)

Maam is a manners thing. Im from Texas, I grew up saying yes maam and no sir to just about everyone. I did however once say "Yes maam" to woman in Boston.... biggest mistake I ever made. Ive never seen someone get so offended. Little did I know people in new england find it heavily offensive. lol
