Nik? Anyone? Protien shake I made.

I have been having a hard time with both protien and liquid consumption. I made a smoothie but it seemed to me that it should have been less in calories, but I was impressed with the protien.

It was: 1/2 cup of vanilla chobani greek yogurt
             1/2 cup of skim milk
             1/2 cup of frozen blueberries
1 scoop of vanilla protien powder
             4 icecubes

The calorie count was 340 and protien was 46. Is there something I could have done differently to cut down on the calories? Is it not a huge deal since we don't absorb as much as we used to? I thought I could take out the milk and add water if needed but that would still only cut out 40 calories. Would also take off 4 of the protien.

Thanks for the help.

Well let's examine:

1/2 c. vanilla chobani = 100 calories
1/2 c. skim milk = 40 calories
1/2 c. blueberries = about 50 calories
1 scoop protein powder = 150 (just from using subtraction. I could be off on the blueberries)

I mean the numbers look good. There is at least 1 gram of protein for every 10 calories, which is good. Honestly the only way I see that you might want to think about lowering the calories is to
use plain Greek yogurt as opposed to vanilla flavored and use either all greek yogurt (which would be about 120 calories total) or all skim milk (which would be 80) but not both. If you need to thin out your shake, use water.

But so long as you are counting this as a MEAL and not a snack or beverage AND so long as the carbs don't far outweigh the protein, it isn't a big problem. Looks like a solid shake to me.

Looks better than some of mine.  Some shakes I make are probably better off frozen and called icecream.  Actually I have added enough frozen fruit that it is soft serve!

I get frustrated by the calories in protein shakes.  If you make them plain (i.e. jus****er and protein powder), they taste pretty bland at best and nasty at worst, but if you add stuff to yummy them up (i.e. yogurt, milk, syrups, peanut butter) they end up high in calories! It seems like the only way you can have a yummy protein shake is if you're willing to let it be a whole meal.

I was frustrated at first but I knew I was using the healthier stuff, so figured it would come along with it. Im going to try caramel next, but not so sure I can drink something with a cold caramel flavor.  Lol

Or if you time them to when you need the calories.

I have been known to make a Chocolate protein shake that goes like this

1 scoop of powder
1/4 bok chocolate SF pudding
12oz milk
2 frozen Bananas
2 tablespoons PB

Granted I drink this on the way to run a half Marathon

One thing you said is interesting to me. “…let it be a whole meal."

Maybe I’m a space alien, but when I do “doctor up" my shakes (and FWIW, my doctored up shake clocks in at 230 calories, 41.5 grams protein), I don’t have any desire to eat until my next meal.

Do you get hungry after shakes?

you can use PB2 in your shakes.  Made from roasted peanuts and alot lower in fat and calories.  Taste awesome in a shake.
