Newly diagnosed diabetes AFTER WLS?

I had WLS in 2007. I lost 137lbs and weighed 137 lbs. I have maintained this weight at around 139-142 pretty well. Prior to surgery I never had any diagnosis of diabetes or any high blood sugars ever found on testing.
Never even had any gestational diabetes when I was pregnant.
I am supposed to have a hysterectomy next week and went yesterday for some preoperative labs. My doctor called me today and told me my blood sugar was 307!
He is shocked, I am shocked...going to get a repeat fasting test tomorrow and a A1C. The test yesterday was not a fasting test, but 307 is high no matter what I had eaten!
I had the surgery, in part, to prevent developing diabetes..WTF is going on? Anyone else ever had this happen?

I was diagnosed August 2011 - 7 years after RNY.   I am a normal weight, exercise at least 5 x a week etc - family genes won out!

Boy, that stinks! Are you able to manage your blood sugar through just diet, or do you take any insulin or meds?
No diabetes prior to WLS?

I am religious about managing my carbs and exercise etc but have to take 1500mg metformin per day at the moment.

I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant 10 years ago that was NOT well controlled.

Both my parents and one sister are type II and three other relatives are type 1.

Did you have ay symptoms?  Did you have RH post RNY?  I like your new avatar.

The only symptom I had was that I felt like crap!!!   I haven't had RH because I have always tried to eat the way we are supposed to - high protein, low carb, regular eating.  If I didn't do this, who knows?

Thanks for the avatar comment - I think I look a bit librarianish but it's not too bad LOL!!!!   The glasses are a new "You're nearly 50" thing too!

"crap" as in low energy or  feeling something was a little off, after meals?

It's hard to tell because it coincided with a tank in my ferritin level to "<2 not detectable by lab" which is what was being investigated when the diabetes was diagnosed! Both had been perfectly fine at the previous lab check (3 months)

It seems to be under control with the Metformin and my more rigorous lifestyle - VERY carb conscious, increased exercise from 3 to 5 x per week and I have lost weight (the 10lbs I'd put on in 2 months and a further 17lbs!!!) and I feel like a new woman!

I don't know what to tell you other than perhaps it would've been ten times worse if you didn't have the surgery???   It's very perplexing!

Yikes! That really sucks! I am glad that they tested your BS so you can work on getting it under control.

Congratulations on your loss and maintenance! That is amazing.
