Question on Birth Control after RNY

Hi All,

I'm in the final stages of prepping for my RNY on 8/6. I received a letter from the surgeon's office today and it mentioned that oral birth control pills would not be effective after RNY. I understand that it probably has to do w/ the malabsorption.

I was wondering what others use (medication-wise) after RNY for birth control and to control your periods. Without the BC, I have pretty heavy, irregular, painful periods.

I received the letter after work, so it's too late to call my OBGYN, but I'll call next week. Just wanted to get an idea of what's worked well for others after surgery.

Thanks!
Tater

I had tried implanon which is the arm implant and it's supposed to make the period disappear altogether but that was the complete opposite effect for me.  I had my period for 7 months straight before I opted out of it.  There's also a paraguard (IUD) that lasts from 1, 5 or 10 years.  From what I understand it's copper and not hormone based.  Then of course Mirena that lasts for 5 years.  This is hormone based.  Just do some research and talk to the gyno.  No pill actually works for us so please be careful.

My surgeon wanted me off my birth control pill 1month pre op and can resume 1them month after. He wants me off due to blood clot risks with surgery. When I asked about resuming the estrogen based pill, he said no problem. I have problems tolerating progestin based birth controll... and get hormonal migraines, so Im glad I can resume the pill.

You should use 2 forms of BC after surgery. I am on the depo shot, have been on it for a while no periods no problems.

No advice, but thanks for the info.

Going to have to add making an appointment to talk to my gyno about this to my ever-expanding list of things to do. I've tried a slew of pills over the years to control my dumb PCOS and periods and this one has been working well for 3-4 years now. I'll be bummed if I basically have to start all over again.

Used oral BCP + condoms for the first few months postop but the BCP caused my copper levels to be crazy high, so got the Mirena at 7 months post op and LOVE IT!!! No periods, no pill to take, copper levels back to normal.....
